DFX Live and events

The real focus of our business is our stage shows and events. This company, and predecessors, have always been stage production companies. The need for a recording facility and then a full record company grew from our stage work. We base our stage events on ®DFX Live. This is a recognisable brand owned exclusively by ®IMG Eden Records. It is a separate section of the company that has its’ own management team. ®DFX Live events are where our artists can learn to create and develop their stage acts. They can become involved in stage productions and learn how to work in this demanding environment...because the REAL money lies in fees and ticket sales from stage performance, not in pubs and clubs.

Recording, mastering etc

This part of the business is standard record label practice. We can record your music; we can publish your music; we can register your music; we can supply ISRC codes for your music; we can supply EAN barcodes for your albums; we can supply catalogue numbers for your published work.

We have strict guidelines and standards. We won’t record or publish anything that includes or incites profanity, abuse or violence. As long as it follows our guidelines though, we’ll record just about anyone, singing or playing just about anything (remember you’ll need permissions to record and sell covers). Generally speaking, we’ll only publish and put our name to original work.

Marketing, promotion and distribution

All our client/artist marketing and promotion activity is focused on raising your profile and to get you and your music “out-there”. Our most basic marketing strategy makes good use of networking sites like ®Facebook, ®Overtone and ®You Tube.

One of our more unusual strategies is working closely with venue owner/managers. Actively providing IMG supported acts into a venue can be a very useful marketing tool for the venue, and in return we use the venue as a marketing focus for the artists appearing there. We’re currently working with three venues. We’re also in the process of developing working relationships with a number of local radio station managers. In this way we can influence (to a small extent) the selection of music on their playlists.

For our internet music distribution we use ®iMusician based in Germany. This facility is free and available to all our artists who produce albums of original work.

A full mechanical distribution deal is available to our artists...BUT...if you think you qualify for a deal, you must be able to answer an honest “Yes” to the following question, “could I successfully give a bank manager 5 good reasons (that make good business sense to an accountant also) that would persuade him to give me R5Million?” When you’ve managed that, then you need to persuade the board of directors of the distribution company to distribute your music, and the retailers to carry your music...then you’ll have your mechanical distribution deal!

To get a mechanical distribution deal you must be widely and publicly known throughout the country, have an established media presence and have a committed following of loyal music buying fans (3 of the 5 reasons!). Don’t be too disheartened though, loads of bands do succeed.

MylifE is a registered foundation working with at‐risk youth and children in Cape Town, South Africa ‐ those living on the street without hope or support. MylifE’S team has worked within this sector for more than 12 years, gathering vital information on the social dynamics that drive these issues. MylifE was established in 2002, and since its inception has successfully healed over 105 youth, moving them from the city’s pavements into full‐time jobs, independence and a ‘normal’ life. It has given hope where there was none.

Latest Social Development figures show that more than 50 per cent of those in substance abuse treatment centres in the Western Cape are under 20 years old, and have methamphetamine (tik) as their primary drug of choice. Across South Africa, some 42 per cent of the prison population is under 25 years of age. These are just some of the statistics MylifE aims to change.

MylifE has seen more than 100 youth pass through its doors in the past four years. Essentially we have built a "village" in a town environment, the successes that have been achieved can truly be seen as miracles. No other organisation can demonstrate success at this level, working with hardened youth in the age bracket of 17 to 25.

The Pay‐it‐Forward concept is already working, as is our Train‐the‐Trainer belief. Now MylifE wishes to move the core of its activities to a rural environment, reaching out to larger groups of youth, while still maintaining its Cape Town centre for Phase 1 Intervention - the first part of the healing process. Celebrate Heritage Day with R.Y.T.H.M

On Thursday, 23rd September at 20h00 R.Y.T.H.M (Reaching Youth Through
Music) together with the Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch will be hosting Duke Ngcukana and his band, musician and cultural purveyor Errol Dyers, Johannesburg-based trumpeter Feya Faku, as well as jazz vocalist extraordinaire Gloria Bosman.

R.Y.T.H.M was formed in 2009; the group, largely made up of students from the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town, aims to celebrate local jazz legends, but most importantly endeavors to help the youth discover our rich musical heritage.

For this year's event, R.Y.T.H.M is largely funded by the South African-Norwegian music corporation, MMINO. This year's concert is particularly special as we pay homage to some of South Africa's musical pioneers who have helped shape the way South African jazz is perceived both locally and internationally. The concert will be held in conjunction with music and cultural workshops on Heritage Day, the 24th of September. Workshops will focus on the history of jazz in South Africa, the personal stories and experience of South African Jazz Legends, as well
as showcasing South African Jazz Music. The workshops facilitators include Little Giants managing director, George Werner, Kyle Shepherd, Dizu Plaaitjies, Darryl Andrews, Nomfundo Xaluva and others.

R.Y.T.H.M will provide transport for 120 children from high schools on the Cape Flats and Southern Suburbs of Cape Town to attend the workshops at UCT.

Join RYTHM on the 23rd of September, at the Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch at 20h15. Tickets for the Our Music concert are available at Computicket: R80 for adults and R60 for

Our aim is twofold.

1] To generate awareness amongst Young South Africans (aged 15-29) regarding Cancer.

Young people don’t usually think about Cancer! There is often a pre-conceived idea that Cancer only affects Older People. Young people don’t want to think about “dreaded diseases”. As the number of people affected by Cancer continues to rise, we want to share information about the disease, about how to manage the disease and about how to assist those affected by the disease.

2] To raise funds and provide financial aid to Young South Africans with Cancer who do not have medical aid.

Young people do not want to think about the impact that Cancer can have on their lives or their finances. Often they are just not prepared to deal with the financial aspects that arise if they do require treatment! This puts an unimaginable strain on both them and their families at a time when they are already dealing with a lot.

Recent studies show cancer has become more prevalent in the younger generation over the years; with certain cancers, like testicular cancer and breast cancer, affecting more and more young men and women as early as in their 20’s.

CANCER DOES NOT HAVE TO BE A DEATH SENTENCE. If caught early, it can be treated and beaten. It’s a tough subject to broach – people often whisper “The Big C” and this creates fear and loathing around the topic.

To break this taboo and align our Foundation with a positive and uplifting message, The Vrede Foundation aims to raise cancer awareness amongst the South African youth through music. Music is the cornerstone of The Vrede Foundation’s process and the live music arena in South Africa is providing the stage from which this new message of hope and action can be delivered. At these live music events young South Africans can get information, learn how to be prepared, where to seek counseling, contribute funds to the Foundation’s trust to help their peers and simultaneously HAVE A REALLY GOOD TIME!

Welcome to the first Cape Town International Guitar Festival 2011 and the second Avril Kinsey Classical Guitar Competition.

The festival and competition, set in the exquisite wine estate of Groot Constantia is dedicated to becoming a premier biennial event on Cape Town's calendar. It is my dream that guitar students, teachers and music lovers come from all over South Africa and the world to experience master performers and teachers at work in classes, talks and concerts here.
My vision, since forming the Cape Town Academy of Music in 2000, is to see young and old play, share, perform and learn from each other so that they grow their interest into a deep and valued lifelong passion, even career. The competition, with a total value of R75,000. is for 19 and Under (amateurs) and 20 and Over (amateurs and professionals). It is open to any age, nationality and level, because I believe learning never stops.
Even professionals need to keep perfecting their craft, as I discovered in 2009 when I completed a Masters of Music research dissertation (awarded cum laude by the University of Cape Town) which brought to light 320 compositions by 72 South African composers. This remarkable find was all the motivation I needed to become an ambassadress for the cause of the classical guitar within and beyond the borders of South Africa.

Through our constituted organization, Friends of the Cape Town Academy of Music (FCTAM 077942), our mission to foster talent and musical excellence through education, performances and festival events has become a reality. SOUND EQUIPMENT:

OSP has equipment that will serve the smallest wedding or private function of 50 to a concert hosting thousands of people. Only top of the range PA is used at all functions and depending on the requirements this could range from normal music playback at fashion shows and weddings to High level concert audio for the professionals.

LIGHTING EQUIPMENT:

OSP has all the lighting requirements to enhance the mood at the smallest wedding or house party to lighting up a large stage for live performances. The stage lighting used, ranges from various PAR Cans to Halogen and Theatre and Follow spots. Moving heads and other specialized lights and Smoke machines are used to add effects to any event. OSP uses manual lighting controllers as well as computer controlled DMX Lighting systems depending on the size of the function and the specific requirements. All lighting is fixed to certified trussing using all the required safety standards.

RECORDING:

If you are a budding young artist or band with lots of songs spinning through you head you can use our comfortable and relaxing multipurpose studio for the production of your own demo CD. The studio can also be used for Voiceover's, Intro’s and Backing Tracks. Recording of live shows can also be done on request. OSP has done various CD compilations for fashion shows as well as school concerts that need the music to be at the required tempo and length as well as mixed to requirements. We make your music the way you want it.

RMS Recording is not just a Digital Recording Studio, although this is it's primary function. Our goal is to support Recording Artists and related personnel in any way we can, to enhance their individual style and sound, and to further their goals.

Much of the success of RMS Studios is attributable to the fact that the owner of RMS is an accomplished musician and engineer in his own right. He understands, from the musician's point of view, what fosters creativity and what stifles it during the recording process.

Mel Roux, a BSc Electronics Engineer, is owner and chief engineer of RMS. He has been playing guitar for over 20 years. Mel has played lead guitar with a number of artists with a diverse range musical styles, including reggae, rock, country, and blues and folk. He has also recorded artists such as Cheree, Rocking Horse, Tony Ridgway, as well as toured as engineer with the likes of America, Rick Wakeman, Chris de Burgh, Carmen, and more, in addition to teaching sound recording at City Varsity in Cape Town.

Mel describes the atmosphere he is attempting to achieve at RMS: "I am striving to foster a relaxed creative atmosphere where artists and corporate clients are free to try new approaches and techniques in a supportive environment. They will find opportunities to improve their musical skills through collaboration with other artists and musical talent. Advise on improving performances is freely available. Cape Town's music scene is starting to expand and steadily becoming one of the larger music scene places to be. Mission Music Magazine wants to be right there as it's happening.

There are a ton of music magazines around, be it local or international, that talk and feature about all kinds of components in the music industry. We wanted to create a music magazine that gives exposure to the local music scene and really show what talent that locals have to offer. Not only that, but also show what they are up to with their music careers and where they're going with it.

Being a musician myself and in a band, iv often felt sometimes that it's really hard to get exposure and im sure many musicians would agree with that. One of the main features in every issue is going to be a full 4-6 page spread exclusive interview with an up and coming local band that's really making a name for themselves.

Tons of stuff is up ahead in the magazine and in future issues. Including band interviews, gigs, cd/dvd reviews, articles, opinions and another big section - equipment. Equipment will play a large role in the magazine with accurate and honest reviews/previews of the latest equipment. We plan on going to a 60 - 80 page magazine in the future. For now it will be a 40 page issue.

How
it all began:

Craig Mischief
was born in Port Elizabeth
and as far back as he can remember he took part in every variety show and
talent contest that came his way. At School he took music as a subject and
after leaving school, packed his bags and left for Johannesburg to fulfil his dream of becoming
a professional entertainer. Initially a three-piece comedy band called “WHITE
MISCHIEF” was formed, with Craig as the front man. After a very successful run
in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth, Craig decided about nine
years ago that a solo career as a stand-up comedian was the ultimate dream.

One of his
proudest moments, was being part of a fundraiser for 13 year old
heart-transplant patient Candice Krummek, who has since had a successful
operation and is enjoying life in London,
and has much to thank Craig for. His largest audience to date was at the Port
Elizabeth Splash Festival where Craig performed successfully before a baying
capacity crowd of 75 000 in 1997.

The PoormanMovement

This project is the vision of a young South African man named Doctor Mohlala and Lido The vision is to use reggae music as a catalyst to lift up the poor in his community of Kwa Thema, Johannesburg under the banner of a not-for-proft organisation named The Poor Man Movement.

Reggae music has its roots in the ghettos of Jamaica. It is a music of the poor, the sufferers, and it deals with a positive message of love, righteousness and spirituality.

Reggae is a truly global music that unites people across the world and forms links that cross racial and national barriers. The vision is to use reggae dances and events in the local community to bring people together, both locally and internationally, and to use these events to bring in help and resources to build up the community and to help the poorest people in practical ways.

Doctor and his friends know from personal experience what it means to live with poverty and for the community you live in to lack resources. Everything which the Poor Man Movement seeks to do is about lifting up the poorest and helping them in their daily struggles, but also to assist with education and learning in the community, because education is the key that enables children to earn good salaries and to lift up the whole community over time.

Here are some of the elements of the vision:

Kebra Ethiopia Sound System

This is the name of the sound system that hosts the dances for the Movement. These reggae session are offered free for anyone to attend, but those attending must bring food which is collected and distributed to the poor locally. So far food is given to Kengezile and Gorogang primary Schools, and the hope is to be able to provide for many other in future, as the scale of the events increases.

It may seem strange to think that running reggae events has a link with community development and poor relief, but it is important to recognise that if these events had not been run, and if there was no internet presence speaking about them and the aims of the Movement, then none of the current international support would be there. Music is catalyst that brings people together and promotes the aims of the Movement globally.

Doctor has created online pages for both Kebra Ethiopia Sound System and the Poor Man Movement on Myspace and these have proved very successful as away of promoting the aims of the Movement and making links across the world with people who are eager to help. Musicians, producers and business people have already come forward from the UK, USA and Europe offering both practical and financial support. Everybody is keen to see the work grow and for the capacity and reach of the Movement to increase dramatically for the benefit of the community.

At this point in time Kebra Ethiopia Sound System does not own its own sound system equipment and has to hire it in for every event is hosts. This is a considerable expense which is borne personally by Doctor and his friends who organise the events. None of them are rich people and it is a great strain upon them. A key objective is to be able to purchase sound system equipment for the Movement so that Kebra Ethiopia Sound can run events without these crippling hire costs each time. Owning the gear will open up many more opportunities to run events in the Jo’burg area and perhaps beyond.

The Cup a Soup Project

May is a cold winter month in Jo’burg and many poor primary school children are affected by it. to help reduce the stress among the kids and make them excited about going to school, the Poor Man Movement runs a one month project called Cup a Soup, whereby the members travel to many different primary schools (one per day between 07:00 and 08:00 in the morning)giving them, bread and a cup of soup.

The school uniform project

This Project, is currently in the planning stages and needs more financial resources to facilitate it. Many kids from poor families do not have the necessary uniform to go to school, and this makes them not want to go to school as they feel bad about themselves. to uplift them the Movement need supports from anyone who can help to provide uniforms for them.

*****The Library Project

There is a small library in the community but it is really too small to serve all the needs of those who might benefit from the information and resources a good library could provide. It mostly accommodates high school learners. The Movement would like to draw in resources to open a library that will also be able to work with primary school Kids, to be able to assist them in their school work and to make some computers available so that they can learn how to use them. So far some international supporters have agreed to provide some books and a few computers, but this is a big project and many more resources are needed.

All of these projects, and others yet to come, can be made reality through the good will, love and support of people who want to see poverty and injustice eradicated. The Poor Man Movement uses reggae music like a trumpet to send a message all over the world and those who have ears to hear and heart that feels will hear that call and join together.

Creative Week Cape Town showcases creativity in design, music, film, digital media, fine arts and crafts in Cape Town. It was started as a legacy event for Cape Town’s bid for World Design Capital 2014. In its inaugural year, Creative Week CT will run from 24 September to 3 October 2010.

At the same time, the Loerie Awards, South Africa’s premier advertising, communication, design and experiential media awards will be hosted in Cape Town from 1 to 3 October 2010. The awards will take place at the Good Hope Centre, while Long Street transforms into the Loeries Village for the second year in a row.

Creative Week CT aims to strengthen the local creative community by providing a platform to showcase the local creative industries. This initiative builds on Creative Cape Town’s focus of communicating, supporting and facilitating the development of the creative and knowledge economy in the Central City of Cape Town.

Events can be staged anywhere in Cape Town. However, with thousands of creative types in Town to attend the Loerie Awards it makes sense to stage events on the Loeries Weekend (1 – 3 Oct) in the Central City, Woodstock, around the Good Hope Centre and the Loeries Village in Long Street – from Buitensingel to Wale Street.

The philosophy of Unreleased Records is to create a sound and image unique in the realm of Southern African and international hip hop. The label’s initial focus is to develop young recording artists and blend raw local talent with professional reputable producers such as Draztik, Nyambz and Marlon Green who have produced for a number of South African and international artists.

Unreleased Records poised itself to increase its influence in the industry with new artists. Cashless Society was the first artist to be released through the label and remains one of the top five recording artists in the South African hip hop genre. Unreleased Records secured a strategic business relationship with Gallo Record Company, the largest music record label on the African continent, for the release of Young Nations debut album "Nations Uprising". 2008 saw the release of “Hip Hop Theatre” by the duo group Imbube, pronounced “Im-booh-beh”, the Zulu word meaning Lion. In the same year, hip hop recording artist F-eezy signed to Unreleased Records to release his sophomore album in June 2009.

Unreleased Records secured CD distribution through its partnership with Soul Candi Distribution and Digital Distribution through MTN Xploaded.

behr - Composer. Sound Designer

Music composer, arranger and session musician behr aka behrellips has performed and composed for numerous renowned bands including Lira, Tasha Baxter, Flash Republic and R.J. Benjamin to name a few. He has composed for over 12 years and has arranged music for various artists, television and film.

Apart from composing behr is also a highly qualified music clinition, bass, guitar, drums and theory teacher and has taught for over 9 years at St. Stithians College in Johannesburg. Being a certified educator of the Trinity College of London, behr has putting his music students through these examinations.

As far as music production, behr uses programs including Cubase, Logic, Ableton Live and Reason. In regards to his productions, he was signed to the music label Soul Candi and had one of his compositions added to their yearly compilation album entitled Soul Candi Session 5, for his composition "The Forgotten People" under his alias Behrellips.

Blacklab Records is an independent label for urban music with a bias
towards reggae, dancehall and HipHop, R&B. It is based in
Kambuzuma, Harare. The name Blacklab Records was coined by the first
artists to come to the studio in appreciation of the producer Bonslag’s
expertise in brewing rhythms to chemically precise compositions and
notes. It was formed with the intention of giving African youths the
chance to showcase their talent and get their minds off engagement in
criminal and self injurious behaviours.

Rockitdog Sound Productions was formed by Richard Harriman and Sharn Downing in 2004 as a Cape Town recording studio focusing on the marketable end of the sound industry, providing professional high quality recording’s, be it a seven piece band or documentary voiceover. Both Richard and Sharn come from highly technical and creative backgrounds, and are constantly striving for originality and versatility. A lot of hard work has taken place over the past few years to develop our abilities in this industry and our dedication to the work we love has eventualised in a place we can call our own, this place is Rockitdog.

The studio itself has been successfully running for nearly 3 years and has been designed to be a creative and comfortable environment, being fortunate enough to have some of the best tools in the industry at our fingertips has proven to be a great advantage. The Protools based studio is capable of mutitracking 16 instruments at a time on record with up to 48 channels on mix down. High quality outboard allows us to have high end control of EFX and Dynamic Processors and professional acoustic design allows us to provide an accurate mix. We have also fitted some the most widely used creative toys in the industry (Access Virus, Lexicon, Juno, dBx, Vox, Dynaudio Acoustics, Antares,Yamaha) and one hell of a guitar collection. With an Impressive vocal front-end provided by Neumann Mics and Focusrite mic pre amps we can also provide the best of quality vocal recording. We are currently also fitting a 16 track analogue system to provide the best of both worlds in a synchronised analogue/digital hybrid environment.
