Award winning Studio opens doors to all.

For many years the Cape Studio Projects has been used almost exclusively by one of the countries foremost artists Andre De Villiers to create international award winning TV commercials as well as his own CD’s and DVD (www.andredevilliers.co.za). Now it is opening its doors to all for music recordings, TV and Radio ads, voice-overs, soundtracks, jingles, mixing, mastering and 5.1 surround sound. Situated opposite the majestic Table Mountain, this unique studio features some of the best equipment available to enable world class recordings at affordable rates. It is also equipped with a 16 channel Aviom monitoring system which enables each musician to adjust, set and store their own monitoring balance and level. What’s more the studio equipment is fully mobile and therefore also available for live recordings. CSP also offers a choice of the most suitable, experienced sound engineers for the specific project.

Some of the artists who have recently been recorded there include Neville D, Zolani (Freshlyground), Gino and Larnelle (Blackkurrant Band) and Sven Blumer (guitarist), to name but a few. For musicians and engineers wanting to know more about recording software and the basics of live sound, an accredited Protools 101 course and a basic sound course are also on offer.

My name is Nicci Hayden, I am a Travel Counsellor based in the wonderful suburb of Durbanville in Cape Town. I grew up in Johannesburg, but moved here with my family in 1998. It was definitely the right move as the lifestyle in Cape Town is just indescribable. I recently got married and my husband and I have settled down in our very own home.

Before embarking on the adventure of becoming a Travel Counsellor, I worked in retail for 5 years. What an unforgettable experience, it taught me so many things about people (clients and staff), the world and most importantly about myself. I managed to travel to many parts of the world, including: Zanzibar, Mauritius, Thailand (Phuket, Bangkok and Chiang Mai), London, New York, Orlando (Disney World), The Bahamas and Las Vegas. Every destination was special, but Thailand stands out amongst the rest, it offers everything: adventure, relaxation, culture, history, I could go on but we would be here for some time.

Rhythm Records South Africa was established in the year 2000. At the time its founder, Albert du Plessis, was looking for a record label to release and distribute live recordings he had made whilst working as a sound engineer at arts festivals.

Since none of the approached labels were prepared to venture in this direction, Albert decided to establish his own label for this purpose. Rhythm Records then came about and released “Tassenberg All Stars -Live @ Tassenberg Stalteater” as its first project.

Since the release of “Tassenberg All Stars,” most of the artists on that very CD have released or distributed some of their own albums through Rhythm Records. These include Koos Kombuis, Piet Botha, Laurinda Hofmeyr, Valiant Swart, Delta Blue, Akkedis and Mikanic.

Valiant Swart was the first artist to join Rhythm Records with his full catalogue of works. Other landmark productions on the Rhythm Records catalogue include the internationally acclaimed poet Breyten Breytenbach's albums “Mondmusiek” and “Lady One” and Mississippi Blues singer / songwriter Eden Brent 's “Something Cool”.

Just before Christmas 2003, Rhythm Records took on the soon-to-prove notoriously provocative Afrikaans Rock band Fokofpolisiekar, a multi award winning band that has irrevocably overturned the way the Afrikaans youth think and sound.

Chris Chameleon joined Rhythm Records in June 2005. His solo project, “Ek Herhaal Jou”, in which he set the poetry of 60s poet Ingrid Jonker to music, has since reached gold status (more than 25,000 units sold) and his latest, “7de Hemel”, has achieved platinum status (more than 50,000 units sold).

In 2004 publicist Liny Kruger started Rhythm Promo and events, handling media relations and promotion. In 2006 Alex Fourie headed up Rhythm International, taking care of “exporting” Rhythm Records artists internationally.

The advent of the Rhythm Records digital downloading store www.RhythmRecords.co.za opens up a new era of creativity in the development, marketing and distribution of musicians, with an ever growing catalogue. The Cape Town live music scene is generally alive and thriving. However, for newcomers and/or visitors, it can be extremely challenging to find out what’s on, where, when and what type of music.

The internet is certainly one means of communicating this info. However, one of its challenges is that it is often left to the bands and venues themselves to log onto these sites and update their details. Unfortunately, even with the best of intentions, this is often not done. Most webmasters agree that the printed gig guide does not compete directly with their web sites because the diverse nature of the two, actually provide a different experience and service to the reader/user.

In terms of existing local printed material, it is either too diverse in nature – with music playing only a minor role – or does not do justice to the performance side of music, concentrating mainly on the dance and “cocktail set” crowd.

There appears to be a definite need for a gig guide magazine that is purely about musicians, by musicians, for musicians, that is current and local. Your LMG is where it starts!

MylifE is a registered foundation working with at‐risk youth and children in Cape Town, South Africa ‐ those living on the street without hope or support. MylifE’S team has worked within this sector for more than 12 years, gathering vital information on the social dynamics that drive these issues. MylifE was established in 2002, and since its inception has successfully healed over 105 youth, moving them from the city’s pavements into full‐time jobs, independence and a ‘normal’ life. It has given hope where there was none.

Latest Social Development figures show that more than 50 per cent of those in substance abuse treatment centres in the Western Cape are under 20 years old, and have methamphetamine (tik) as their primary drug of choice. Across South Africa, some 42 per cent of the prison population is under 25 years of age. These are just some of the statistics MylifE aims to change.

MylifE has seen more than 100 youth pass through its doors in the past four years. Essentially we have built a "village" in a town environment, the successes that have been achieved can truly be seen as miracles. No other organisation can demonstrate success at this level, working with hardened youth in the age bracket of 17 to 25.

The Pay‐it‐Forward concept is already working, as is our Train‐the‐Trainer belief. Now MylifE wishes to move the core of its activities to a rural environment, reaching out to larger groups of youth, while still maintaining its Cape Town centre for Phase 1 Intervention - the first part of the healing process. Music composer, arranger and session musician behr aka behrellips has performed and composed for numerous renowned bands including Lira, Tasha Baxter, Flash Republic and R.J. Benjamin to name a few. He has composed for over 12 years and has arranged music for various artists, television and film.

Apart from composing behr is also a highly qualified music clinition, bass, guitar, drums and theory teacher and has taught for over 9 years at St. Stithians College in Johannesburg. Being a certified educator of the Trinity College of London, behr has putting his music students through these examinations.

As far as music production, behr uses programs including Cubase, Logic, Ableton Live and Reason. In regards to his productions, he was signed to the music label Soul Candi and had one of his compositions added to their yearly compilation album entitled Soul Candi Session 5, for his composition "The Forgotten People" under his alias Behrellips.

SOUND EQUIPMENT:

LIGHTING EQUIPMENT:

The stage lighting used, ranges from various PAR Cans to Halogen and Theatre and Follow spots. Moving heads and other specialized lights and Smoke machines are used to add effects to any event. OSP uses manual lighting controllers as well as computer controlled DMX Lighting systems depending on the size of the function and the specific requirements. All lighting is fixed to certified trussing using all the required safety standards.

RECORDING:

If you are a budding young artist or band with lots of songs spinning through you head you can use our comfortable and relaxing multipurpose studio for the production of your own demo CD. The studio can also be used for Voiceover's, Intro’s and Backing Tracks. Recording of live shows can also be done on request. OSP has done various CD compilations for fashion shows as well as school concerts that need the music to be at the required tempo and length as well as mixed to requirements. We make your music the way you want it.

History
Bothners’ South African origins date back to around 1902, when Charles Bothner, a piano tuner by trade, set up shop in Cape Town. The business was soon importing and selling pianos. Over the next 50 years, with contributions from his wife and sons, Bothners became a countrywide household name.

Background
In 1970 Charles’s son Paul founded Paul Bothner Music in Claremont, situated in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town. Gradually the business expanded, and Paul Bothner brought in experts as partners and associates, notably Keith Blacher and Roy Viljoen. Paul Bothner’s son, Charles Bothner, currently oversees operations. Today Paul Bothner Music consists of four stores servicing the greater Cape Town area and enjoys the status of premier musical instrument retailer in the Western Cape. Bothner’s has also recently widened its retail base to Johannesburg.

Logically, with the retail expansion, the company ventured into importing and wholesale distribution. This was encouraged by the acquisition of the Roland representation for South Africa (excluding Gauteng Province) in 1983. The company now imports a wide range of high quality products and supplies retail music shops throughout South Africa and it’s neighboring countries.

Message from the Festival Founder and Director - Avril Kinsey

Welcome to the first Cape Town International Guitar Festival 2011 and the second Avril Kinsey Classical Guitar Competition.

The festival and competition, set in the exquisite wine estate of Groot Constantia is dedicated to becoming a premier biennial event on Cape Town's calendar. It is my dream that guitar students, teachers and music lovers come from all over South Africa and the world to experience master performers and teachers at work in classes, talks and concerts here.
My vision, since forming the Cape Town Academy of Music in 2000, is to see young and old play, share, perform and learn from each other so that they grow their interest into a deep and valued lifelong passion, even career. The competition, with a total value of R75,000. is for 19 and Under (amateurs) and 20 and Over (amateurs and professionals). It is open to any age, nationality and level, because I believe learning never stops.
Even professionals need to keep perfecting their craft, as I discovered in 2009 when I completed a Masters of Music research dissertation (awarded cum laude by the University of Cape Town) which brought to light 320 compositions by 72 South African composers. This remarkable find was all the motivation I needed to become an ambassadress for the cause of the classical guitar within and beyond the borders of South Africa.

Through our constituted organization, Friends of the Cape Town Academy of Music (FCTAM 077942), our mission to foster talent and musical excellence through education, performances and festival events has become a reality. It is also the financial vehicle through which our friends, patrons, funders and sponsors may feel comfortable as they partner with us.

The philosophy of Unreleased Records is to create a sound and image unique in the realm of Southern African and international hip hop. The label’s initial focus is to develop young recording artists and blend raw local talent with professional reputable producers such as Draztik, Nyambz and Marlon Green who have produced for a number of South African and international artists.

Unreleased Records poised itself to increase its influence in the industry with new artists. Cashless Society was the first artist to be released through the label and remains one of the top five recording artists in the South African hip hop genre. Unreleased Records secured a strategic business relationship with Gallo Record Company, the largest music record label on the African continent, for the release of Young Nations debut album "Nations Uprising". 2008 saw the release of “Hip Hop Theatre” by the duo group Imbube, pronounced “Im-booh-beh”, the Zulu word meaning Lion. In the same year, hip hop recording artist F-eezy signed to Unreleased Records to release his sophomore album in June 2009.

Celebrate Heritage Day with R.Y.T.H.M

On Thursday, 23rd September at 20h00 R.Y.T.H.M (Reaching Youth Through
Music) together with the Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch will be hosting Duke Ngcukana and his band, musician and cultural purveyor Errol Dyers, Johannesburg-based trumpeter Feya Faku, as well as jazz vocalist extraordinaire Gloria Bosman.

R.Y.T.H.M was formed in 2009; the group, largely made up of students from the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town, aims to celebrate local jazz legends, but most importantly endeavors to help the youth discover our rich musical heritage.

For this year's event, R.Y.T.H.M is largely funded by the South African-Norwegian music corporation, MMINO. This year's concert is particularly special as we pay homage to some of South Africa's musical pioneers who have helped shape the way South African jazz is perceived both locally and internationally. The concert will be held in conjunction with music and cultural workshops on Heritage Day, the 24th of September. Workshops will focus on the history of jazz in South Africa, the personal stories and experience of South African Jazz Legends, as well
as showcasing South African Jazz Music. The workshops facilitators include Little Giants managing director, George Werner, Kyle Shepherd, Dizu Plaaitjies, Darryl Andrews, Nomfundo Xaluva and others.

R.Y.T.H.M will provide transport for 120 children from high schools on the Cape Flats and Southern Suburbs of Cape Town to attend the workshops at UCT.

The SoundHouse is vibrant and alive with bobbing heads and tapping feet. It does exactly what its name suggests – encourages sound and musical creativity – made possible by harnessing technology. There are fifteen computer music workstations, each equipped with a musical keyboard, computer hardware, microphone and a collection of music and multi-media software that enables the teaching and learning of musical concepts and creation through active participation. It offers children and young people a musical multi-media experience from the ages of 5 and up – in fact anyone who wants to compose music using computer technology, even if you’ve never tried before. When the SoundHouse first started, it was an oddity – and was met with skepticism from academics, teachers and parents. It was sometimes placed in the box of “fun activity” rather than learning. We’ve carried on regardless of the criticism and are now in our 9th year of existence. The SoundHouse motto has always been that learning MUST be fun!

Over the years the SoundHouse has been a part of many success stories: inspired children, converted teachers and schools who installed their own music technology labs after a visit here. We’ve also had meaningful collaborations with organisations such as Child Welfare, the SOS children’s Village and Molo Songololo, to name but a few. The SoundHouse was established to inspire ALL children to make music in a fun and non-threatening way, but it has evolved into so much more. Today, music technology has taken the world by storm and everyone wants to be a songwriter, pop idol, or music video producer. Or perhaps you just want to try it out for yourself!
