Firestarter is a collaboration of two media freelancers - publicist & PR specialist Genevieve Cutts and editor/graphic artist/camera-man/creative director Warren Coetzer

Firestarter Publicity was started by publicist Genevieve Cutts. Her background is in entertainment publicity, her career having started 13 years ago at the renowned Market Theatre.

In 2001 Genevieve created an in-house publicity office for Isidingo, a daily TV soap and from there went onto other shows produced by Endemol including All You Need Is Love, Mojo and PlayTV, all whilst managing the company’s corporate communications portfolio.

In 2004 Genevieve took the first step toward being a business owner by forming a strategic partnership with the agency Glam Slam. WHO WE ARE

Warren Coetzer began his Visual Media career in 1997 when he joined forces with illustrator / animator, Savyra Meyer, to launch Fresh Inc. a graphic design agency.

In 2001 Warren left the warm balmy shores of Durban for the teeming metropolis of Johannesburg and took his first tentative steps onto the bottom rung of the television industry ladder. He worked through the first series of Big Brother South Africa as a Production Assistant and was soon ingrained within the Creative Department of, production company, Endemol South Africa. In 2005 Warren took up the post of Head of Creative, developing and adapting television formats for a local market.

Then in early 2007, he once again gave in to a call from the sea and left the buzz of Johannesburg for the serene tranquility of False Bay’s Muizenberg. Warren now heads up the Visual Media component of Firestarter.

The SoundHouse is vibrant and alive with bobbing heads and tapping feet. It does exactly what its name suggests – encourages sound and musical creativity – made possible by harnessing technology. There are fifteen computer music workstations, each equipped with a musical keyboard, computer hardware, microphone and a collection of music and multi-media software that enables the teaching and learning of musical concepts and creation through active participation. It offers children and young people a musical multi-media experience from the ages of 5 and up – in fact anyone who wants to compose music using computer technology, even if you’ve never tried before. When the SoundHouse first started, it was an oddity – and was met with skepticism from academics, teachers and parents. It was sometimes placed in the box of “fun activity” rather than learning. We’ve carried on regardless of the criticism and are now in our 9th year of existence. The SoundHouse motto has always been that learning MUST be fun!

Over the years the SoundHouse has been a part of many success stories: inspired children, converted teachers and schools who installed their own music technology labs after a visit here. We’ve also had meaningful collaborations with organisations such as Child Welfare, the SOS children’s Village and Molo Songololo, to name but a few. The SoundHouse was established to inspire ALL children to make music in a fun and non-threatening way, but it has evolved into so much more. Today, music technology has taken the world by storm and everyone wants to be a songwriter, pop idol, or music video producer. Or perhaps you just want to try it out for yourself! The philosophy of Unreleased Records is to create a sound and image unique in the realm of Southern African and international hip hop. The label’s initial focus is to develop young recording artists and blend raw local talent with professional reputable producers such as Draztik, Nyambz and Marlon Green who have produced for a number of South African and international artists.

Unreleased Records poised itself to increase its influence in the industry with new artists. Cashless Society was the first artist to be released through the label and remains one of the top five recording artists in the South African hip hop genre. Unreleased Records secured a strategic business relationship with Gallo Record Company, the largest music record label on the African continent, for the release of Young Nations debut album "Nations Uprising". 2008 saw the release of “Hip Hop Theatre” by the duo group Imbube, pronounced “Im-booh-beh”, the Zulu word meaning Lion. Rhythm Records South Africa was established in the year 2000. At the time its founder, Albert du Plessis, was looking for a record label to release and distribute live recordings he had made whilst working as a sound engineer at arts festivals.

Since none of the approached labels were prepared to venture in this direction, Albert decided to establish his own label for this purpose. Rhythm Records then came about and released “Tassenberg All Stars -Live @ Tassenberg Stalteater” as its first project.

Since the release of “Tassenberg All Stars,” most of the artists on that very CD have released or distributed some of their own albums through Rhythm Records. These include Koos Kombuis, Piet Botha, Laurinda Hofmeyr, Valiant Swart, Delta Blue, Akkedis and Mikanic.

Valiant Swart was the first artist to join Rhythm Records with his full catalogue of works. Other landmark productions on the Rhythm Records catalogue include the internationally acclaimed poet Breyten Breytenbach's albums “Mondmusiek” and “Lady One” and Mississippi Blues singer / songwriter Eden Brent 's “Something Cool”.

Just before Christmas 2003, Rhythm Records took on the soon-to-prove notoriously provocative Afrikaans Rock band Fokofpolisiekar, a multi award winning band that has irrevocably overturned the way the Afrikaans youth think and sound.

Chris Chameleon joined Rhythm Records in June 2005. His solo project, “Ek Herhaal Jou”, in which he set the poetry of 60s poet Ingrid Jonker to music, has since reached gold status (more than 25,000 units sold) and his latest, “7de Hemel”, has achieved platinum status (more than 50,000 units sold).

In 2004 publicist Liny Kruger started Rhythm Promo and events, handling media relations and promotion. In 2006 Alex Fourie headed up Rhythm International, taking care of “exporting” Rhythm Records artists internationally.

RMS Recording is not just a Digital Recording Studio, although this is it's primary function. Our goal is to support Recording Artists and related personnel in any way we can, to enhance their individual style and sound, and to further their goals.

Much of the success of RMS Studios is attributable to the fact that the owner of RMS is an accomplished musician and engineer in his own right. He understands, from the musician's point of view, what fosters creativity and what stifles it during the recording process.

Mel Roux, a BSc Electronics Engineer, is owner and chief engineer of RMS. He has been playing guitar for over 20 years. Mel has played lead guitar with a number of artists with a diverse range musical styles, including reggae, rock, country, and blues and folk. He has also recorded artists such as Cheree, Rocking Horse, Tony Ridgway, as well as toured as engineer with the likes of America, Rick Wakeman, Chris de Burgh, Carmen, and more, in addition to teaching sound recording at City Varsity in Cape Town.

Mel describes the atmosphere he is attempting to achieve at RMS: "I am striving to foster a relaxed creative atmosphere where artists and corporate clients are free to try new approaches and techniques in a supportive environment. We are a group of three DJ's and promoters (otherwise known as Com.it, Microstripe and Niskerone) who are dedicated to furthering the music industry in Cape Town. We love to party but are serious about music. How we do this? Mixing up genres, interesting visuals, artwork and free giveaways are all part of the methods we use to bring the people of Cape Town a unique partying experience.

Com.it has been part of the Momentum crew who have brought you drum 'n bass every Tuesday night on Bush Radio these past few years.
Microstripe has been event coordinator for the Liquidfridge since 2002, and has held the infamous HUB parties as well as being a Sound Squad member.
One half of Dhala Kulture, Niskerone has been running the Phase weekly drum n bass nights in TableView, and School Nights at Black Sheep.

We are not just about the partying though. We also host a series of free workshops around three major areas - the production side of music, the business side of the music industry, and live performance. The Big Love workshops are supported by the Red Bull Music Academy.

The Owner of Turning Tricks entertainment, Duncan Bell, started his musical career at the age of 5 playing piano, once he left school, Duncan picked up the Bass guitar and never looked back. Duncan has played in many bands, the most successful being LIBIDO, who saw a number of hits on regional and national radio.

After playing live for many years, Duncan saw that he was being attracted to the management of artists, as he saw the potential of South African musicians to compete with international stars, this led to the formation of Turning Tricks entertainment.

Turning Tricks entertainment has been going in one form or another for the past 13 years. Our first success saw us signing a little known band from Pretoria called “Saron Gas”. Swett Shoppe studios will continue to update and improve our facilities to keep us at the cutting edge of music technology. We run courses teaching music, sound engineering and music management at nominal and affordable rates in preparation for your project. In 2007 Touch it Records was established as a independent record label by DJ & Producer Tony Finger. The aim was to create a platform on which he could find a way to release tracks without any compromise, releasing "House Music a la Touch" while "Taking no Finger from any A&R!".

In a short period of time, with its wide ranging and genre defying grooves, crossing between house, electro & progressive sound, Touch It records is fast gaining interest and support from the worldwide scene. Cape Town's music scene is starting to expand and steadily becoming one of the larger music scene places to be. Mission Music Magazine wants to be right there as it's happening.

There are a ton of music magazines around, be it local or international, that talk and feature about all kinds of components in the music industry. We wanted to create a music magazine that gives exposure to the local music scene and really show what talent that locals have to offer. Not only that, but also show what they are up to with their music careers and where they're going with it.

Being a musician myself and in a band, iv often felt sometimes that it's really hard to get exposure and im sure many musicians would agree with that. One of the main features in every issue is going to be a full 4-6 page spread exclusive interview with an up and coming local band that's really making a name for themselves.

Tons of stuff is up ahead in the magazine and in future issues. Including band interviews, gigs, cd/dvd reviews, articles, opinions and another big section - equipment. Equipment will play a large role in the magazine with accurate and honest reviews/previews of the latest equipment. We plan on going to a 60 - 80 page magazine in the future. For now it will be a 40 page issue.

The Cape Town live music scene is generally alive and thriving. However, for newcomers and/or visitors, it can be extremely challenging to find out what’s on, where, when and what type of music.

The internet is certainly one means of communicating this info. However, one of its challenges is that it is often left to the bands and venues themselves to log onto these sites and update their details. Unfortunately, even with the best of intentions, this is often not done. Most webmasters agree that the printed gig guide does not compete directly with their web sites because the diverse nature of the two, actually provide a different experience and service to the reader/user.

In terms of existing local printed material, it is either too diverse in nature – with music playing only a minor role – or does not do justice to the performance side of music, concentrating mainly on the dance and “cocktail set” crowd.

There appears to be a definite need for a gig guide magazine that is purely about musicians, by musicians, for musicians, that is current and local. Your LMG is where it starts!
