Hot Water
HOT WATER
“..Hot Water must easily be one of the most exciting music projects to come out of SA recently." THE CITIZEN
HOT WATER are a fresh and exciting band uniting 5 different and diverse cultures that gives them an invaluable role to play in the New South Africa. Based in Cape Town and captained by South African singer-songwriter and guitarist Donovan Copley, the band is a densely African fusion of powerful, uplifting sounds and vocals.
Since it originated in 2005 as the brainchild of Copley, the band has grown from strength to strength and within 3 months Hot Water was booked to play one of South Africa’s most prestigious events: Kirstenbosch ‘Summer Sunset’ concerts. Since then Hot Water have created a fan base which is as diverse as they are and through an organic process touched the hearts of many South Africans, tourists, adults and children alike.
Hot Water are now prepared to embark on a journey that will take them overseas to Europe, with great thanks to Marcel van den Berg from Wateringen, Holland. Mr van den Berg and his family watched the band perform live at the Vodacom concert series in Cape Town, and being so inspired by the band and their energy that he insisted on them taking their passion to Europe. Consequently Hot Water will give their debut performance at one of Holland’s biggest festivals, ‘Waterpop’ in August 2008.
To date Hot Water have released two albums, Home (2005) and One (2008) to great critical acclaim. Their sound ranges from upbeat South African jives, Hopping Blues, Modern Folk ballads and inspiring cross-cultural gems. Their winning first single Bushfire is currently being screened throughout Europe and the US in Italian company, Primigi’s 07/08 commercial campaigns. Adding to this exciting achievement another Hot Water song, the soulful Thembi has been selected for an IEO commercial, also currently being screened in Italy.
One of the more significant highlights for the band after a short time was to be a part of the Human Rights Day Concert being filmed for BBC World. Hot Water were featured in an episode of Destination Music, which aired internationally on high rotation worldwide.
As for the elements which make up Hot Water:
Donovan Copley – Spearhead of the band on guitar, lead vocals, hang and harmonica. Soubry Makupula – Xhosa member of the group brings his deep African spirit with vocals, percussion and dynamic dance. Leon Visser – Afrikaans mother tongue brings his warm vocals, and adds percussion, hang and djembe to the mix. Chris Bakalanga – from The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) now living in South Africa, plays bass guitar and assists with backing vocals. Devin Jones – on Drum Kit; holds a degree in Jazz from the University of Cape Town and is endorsed by Spaun Drums, California.
Hot water represents the great diversity that embodies the South African nation. By bringing together 5 different musicians from very different backgrounds, creating music that inspires people of all ages, races and cultures. It is no surprise that 5 tracks from their album Home, have been chosen to appear on the international EDEL release 'A Day in Cape Town'.
The future for Hot Water holds many exciting possibilities. They are in the process of planning a 2/3 month tour to Europe for summer 2009 and have an exciting array of shows lined up this year all over South Africa.
