'The Tea Party' is a new outdoor festival, aiming to create an event firmly rooted in the eclectic, artistic and humorous side of life, a cultural mash-up weaved together with a glittering thread of freaky funk, booting world beats, jiving rock 'n roll, swinging jazz, up-beat salsa, big beating electro breaks, honky-tonk, tech-house, flamjangled folk, and anything that 'swings' or 'grooves'. 'The Tea Party' is first and foremost about an experience. Themed area's, dressing up, performance art, over the top theatrics, absurd activities and whatever else can be thrown into the mix to create a transformed reality where you can be whatever you want to be! Almost each of the exciting feature films and short films make their South African theatrical premieres. The Makabra Ensemble will also debut their Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde movie soundtrack performance, live to the screening of this 1920 silent classic. This year's event also sees the first South African made feature film entry, Night Drive (on Halloween night), with another local connection in the shape of SA-born director Richard Stanley contributing a chapter to the 6-part Horror anthology The Theatre Bizarre, which will close the event on 4 November. The University of Pretoria Symphony Orchestra is an ensemble of young, vibrant and highly talented University of Pretoria students as well as professional musicians that annually showcases their phenomenal flair. On Friday, 14 October 2011, they will be presenting this gala concert, “Smashing Symphonic Soloists”. World Fringe Festival
The World Fringe Alliance, comprising eight Fringe Festivals from four continents, was launched this week at the Amsterdam Fringe Festival and Grahamstown was named as the Chair and the host city of the Alliance’s first global meeting in 2012.
The Alliance, which has a collective annual audience in excess of 1 million, aims to promote ‘creative pathways’ for artists to move between member Fringe Festivals as well as to present a collective offering to global sponsors and funders. LekkerHoekie Opskop
