Cape Town Festival![]() Cape Town Carnival 2010 – all systems go!
The Cape Town Carnival, which brings together the city’s diverse communities in an exciting and creative annual event, is scheduled for 18–20 March, with the grand parade taking place in Cape Town’s CBD on the 20th.
Against the backdrop of the ‘gloom and doom’ of the world-wide recession, the Carnival is just the thing to revive people’s spirits. Whilst the Carnival has not escaped the budget cuts required in a recession, its vision hasn’t changed from the initial concept: it is still a showcase to celebrate the Cape’s heritage and creativity, contributing to social cohesion and economic growth over time.
With a mass of over 2000 cross-genre, cross-cultural performers partaking in the event, six original Carnival songs that will get the people dancing and a spectacular float and elaborate costumes as draw cards, there should be something to suit just about anyone’s taste.
The Carnival Parade is a free-access event, encouraging all of Cape Town to share in the fun and excitement. In addition to the festivities of the main parade, spectators can also look forward to celebrations after the event. A range of other fringe events can also be expected.
