Bellville Rock City Rocks Your World

April 27, 2009 – 23:15 by rachelle

“The success of aKING and Van Coke Kartel in 2008 legitimised the rumours of a rock ‘n’ roll scene in Bellville… This is the story of the Bellville music scene, a view from the inside, established rock artists, emerging bands, and friends alike.”

Skinnier-than-skinny jeans. Smoking with their cigarettes between their thumb and forefinger. Long hair. Earrings in inhumanely places. Tattoos. Sex. Drugs. Leather. Rock ‘n’ roll personified. These are all adjectives to describe the hardcore lifestyle of Bellville Boys. But ultimately there are only two descriptions of Bellville Boys: One – Hotness combined with an incredible amount of sex appeal. Two – Bellville Boys are extraordinary musos – the Bellville Rock City Compilation is the epitome of this.

BRC is definitely a collector’s item anyone who calls himself a rock ‘n’ roll lover can not go without. It contains an Audio CD with 13 of Bellville’s most prominent Rock acts. From newcomers such as Tatum, Thieve and Ashtray Electric to renowned artists such as Fokofpolisiekar and aKING to golden oldies such as KOBUS! and Springbok Nude Girls. With tracks like “Quite Overstared” and “Last Day December” unreleased before featured on BRC, this is not just another compilation of tracks you already have on some or other album lying around.

The DVD contains a 30 minute documentary shortfilm entitled “12 Mile Stone”, which gives the viewer an access all areas tour with Fokofpolisiekar, aKING, Ashtray Electric and other Bellville groups. The story of this epic evolution of a rock scene in a small suburban town will leave you with goosebumps. It literally takes you into the lives of these rock legends – into their minds and existence and leaves you with nothing but respect for a lifestyle so often admired by some and scorned at by others. The DVD also includes 10 music Videos and 8 Mp3’s of some rare and some previously unreleased songs, including a Fokofpolisiekar gem “Fokn blades”.

The booklet is a 48 page collector’s book in which band members share photos and experiences. For those who have not been converted to the religion of rock ‘n’ roll since its existence, it takes you back to the days where it all started. With snippets from history when 7th Breed, New World Inside, V.O.D. and Time Spent were still reigning, you experience the influences of these bands on the rock musos we admire today.

Without a doubt – Bellville Rock City is a masterpiece. Inspiring. Admiring. Legendary.
