What Was DJ QBert Like?

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

Trying to write about QBert in little black and white words is like frying eggs with a teaspoon. Aint no way we’re gonna capture it here, now. The party was mal, the people were mal, the music was mal. We just thought we’d let y’all know that and send a couple of pics your way, courtesy of The Assembly crew. SA DJs, take heed.

Sibot primed em, and Ready D got everyone…well, ready, so by the time the Filipino-American, 4-time DMC Champ took the mounted stage wearing his King of Clubs shirt, both the cap-wearing hoods in the front row and the glam skirts at the back couches were eyes fixed in the limelight.

Thanks to some striking urban assault all over the Mother City (who didn’t see the stencil posters flanking the highways?), the pre-event publicity was huge. The turnout was huge. And the guy actually rocked up, which is more than we can say for Axl Rose and “Snow Patrol“. Now, after the event, it’s too easy to spew something like, “the scratch champ lived up to his name, blah, blah, blah”. I aint no scratch DJ. But lemme tell you, the party was crazy. And in both underground and globetrotting turntablism, I reckon it’s half about the sound and half about the crowd. So on that note, nimble-fingers had us. Peace.

  • QBert scratches “hamster style,” which means that his mixer’s crossfader works in reverse order. (Many other scratch DJs prefer “hamster style” to regular style.
  • In 2001, QBert masterminded Wave Twisters, a movie based on the album of the same name. Animators and digital artists had to invent images and movements to the pre-recorded music, as opposed to the other way around.
