The Cape Music Industry Commission is hosting a series of workshops on the intricacies of Intellectual Property in the burgeoning Music Industry. The two-hour workshops facilitated by the Cape MIC CEO, Peter Theunissen, and staff take place in Mitchells Plein & Langa on the 14th and 28th of March 2009 at designated times.
The workshops will take a good, hard look at the tricky territory of Intellectual Property in a local and global music context and cover topics like:
- What is Intellectual Property?
- How does one protect it? (registration, membership, reproduction, pay outs)
- What portion of the profits of the composition is one entitled to (producers, publishers, band members)?
Aimed at composers and/or anyone active or interested in the business of music, the course also includes a lucid question and answer portion. Discussions will range from registration with collection houses (royalties) to IP in emerging digital media and beyond, and will give participants a clearer understanding of how South African composer’s IP is protected in a local and global music economy.
