ZIMFEST 08: Who Are PASSOP, Anyway?

Recently, the question we’ve been asked the most is, “Who gets the ZIMFEST 08 fundraising money?” Yes, some bands are playing for the sheer exposure, while the headline acts are playing for a reduced rate. Why? So that an organisation called PASSOP can put bread on the table and raise awareness about the realities of the Zimbabwe situation.

I Am…The daily struggle of a refugee in Cape Town.
SA Music Vids on Zoopy | YouTube | Facebook

You may remember Braam Hanekom as the guy who used to run The Coffee Bean on Main Rd Rondebosch. Since then, the young Zimbabwean has worked tirelessly and sacrificed much to help the victims of the Zimbabwe exodus. Braam recently went on a border run to Zimbabwe and back, to know exactly what it’s like for the refugees. He’s written an amazingly blunt account of his experience, from which this excerpt comes:

“I visited SMG Military Base unannounced. I was surprised to see that other than access to the base, the security and management of the holding shed was done by the South African Police Service. I saw some immigrants being dropped off by military personal. There were approximately 400 people in total. The women and men were separated by a wall through the middle of the warehouse like structure.. Children and minors were kept in the same holdings among the adults. There were no immigration officials present and no clear registration for deportation. The conditions there were appalling. There was no privacy for the immigrants there and no blankets were provided. I witnessed the police feeding immigrants by holding a loaf of bread in front of the bars, while the immigrants desperately tried to reach out and grab a handful from the loaf. It was like watching animals being fed in a cage. There was urine and human feces in all corners of the warehouse. Additionally, the toilets were flooded and clogged and inaccessible to immigrants without police allowing and escorting them.”

ZIMFEST 08 | Ike Moriz, Coda, New Altum Confirmed!

Overtone is proud to annouce that three new artists have been added to the confirmed lineup at ZIMFEST 08! This year, pop icon Ike Moriz, neo-classical outfit Coda and post hardcore experimental alternative rock fivepiece New Altum will be playing at ZIMFEST 08 on the 6th of September at Tafelberg Tavern, Cape Town.

ZIMFEST 08 | Ike Moriz Coda New Altum
International indie-pop star and actor Ike Moriz has returned from the UK, where he received wide acclaim for his two albums ‘Mirrors & Shade’ and ‘Play Me’. In the US, Ike was described as ‘Bowie without the glam meets Oasis without the self-importance teamed with UK chart alternative without the boredom.’ Representing a fresh new wave of contemporary South African music, CODA brings together local and international influences by combining influences of African music with electric strings and DJ. Barely a year old, CODA has been hailed by many as one of the most exciting new groups in South Africa. As far as ?sound? goes, New Altum don?t try and go for a particular sound when they write music but rather concentrate on freedom of expression. They believe in the entire production and not just the music. ?People want to be entertained at the end of the day?, so they try and hit as many of the senses as they can.

The festival is gathering momentum as South Africa’s first ever charity fundraising festival for Zimbabwe. The primary beneficiary of the one-day concert is PASSOP (People Against Suffering, Suppression, Oppression and Poverty), an NGO that works primarily with refugees and asylum-seekers from African countries.
