To blog, of course is the answer! That's how we keep our numbers up and our viewers interested. So today for the sake of blogging I am going to vent some. One thing I am finding very frustrating in industries like ours, be it design, video production, print, web, sound... whatever, it is becoming harder and harder to sift through the wannabes and think- I-ams , to find a truly talented artist. I am in no way saying that there is a lack of talent, I know a lot of very talented folk, there just seems to be an influx of people who are either completely delusional about what they produce, or are just plain taking a chance. Of these categories the latter is, in my opinion the most harmful to our industry. The reason for this is that they offer clients work done at upsettingly low rates, and in this wonderful financial state our world is in currently... They buy it! Two major problems for us, one we have to lower our costs almost to a loss to compete, and two, the general quality and therefore reputation of the industry plummets. A lose, lose situation if you ask me.

The Music Business Masterclass (MBM) is THE course for music industry professionals. The course is scheduled to run from 6 March 2012 and only a limited number of seats are left.
THE HISTORY:
Three major forces in the South African music industry have combined to create THE course in Music Business
Academy of Sound Engineering, in conjunction with David Chislett and Nick Matzukis, are proud to present the Music Business Master-class (MBM). Billed as “the premier one-stop business course for the modern musician trying to make it in the new music industry”, the MBM is designed to train artists and managers, up to the highest professional level, in everything they need to know about today’s music business.
The industry is abuzz with talk of how the music business has changed, how record companies might be fading away, and how artists need to “do it themselves” as independents. The problem, however, is that there is not enough information readily available for average South African musicians to empower themselves to take advantage of this situation. That is all set to change with the introduction of the MBM.
Many courses and ideas have come and gone in the past, but the MBM is the only course where you can find out everything in one place, at an advanced level.
The course is given by perhaps the two most highly-respected industry training consultants in the professional music environment, Nick Matzukis and David Chislett, under the auspices of the Academy of Sound Engineering. The course comprises a two-month skills programme that covers everything from record and publishing contracts and music law, to marketing, new business models and the use of the digital arena. It is the only truly comprehensive course available today that empowers musicians and managers of any level to seize control of their careers by understanding the business and then being able to take advantage of the new business terrain in the music industry. THE PRESENTERS:
David Chislett has been in the music business in South Africa since 1987. He is highly respected and has extensive practical experience as a trainer, musician, DJ, band manager, publicist, promoter, road manager, MC and consultant.
David is the author of the respected book “One Two, One Two, A Step by Step Guide to the South African Music Industry”. The book has been endorsed by the Music Managers’ Forum of South Africa, and has been hailed as the most practical and understandable guide of its type available today. It is a unique book in that it is aimed at new artists and managers who do not have a firm understanding of the business. Chapters cover planning, management, marketing, gear purchases, touring, publishing and more.
Dave is also a multi-talented speaker, voice artist and MC with a strong background in poetry, theatre and live radio work, as well as live events and radio ads. He has been asked to give music business presentations all over South Africa and has established himself as the “go-to guy” for practical and informative training sessions.
Trained in public speaking, debating and acting from school level, David graduated to national radio in 1994 when Barney Simon used him as a live radio correspondent on 5FM from London. This stint developed into the creation of the SA Music Explosion, a half hour weekly show on Barney Simon’s daily night time show on 5FM in 1996, that David hosted and ran.
Apart from being a published author and consultant, David is also a poet and public speaker who works with creative activations, motivation and inspiration. He has lectured at Academy of Sound Engineering, Moshito, AFDA and WITS on the music business and creative writing and has performed at numerous spoken word evenings around South Africa.
David was awarded the Ernst Van Heerden Creative Writing Award in 1998 for the short story: Pin Stripe Punk. He created, edited and contributed to Urban 1 in 2001, edited and contributed to Urban 2 in 2002 and edited Urban 03 in 2003. He also contributed to “From Joburg To Jozi” published by Penguin Books as well as contributing short fiction to Litnet, Unlikleystories.org, Botsotso, Ons Klyntjie, The Literate Gymnast and Grrr.
David has MC’d Moshito, The SA Music Industry Conference, the Up The Creek festival and the Revolution Stage at Oppikoppi in 2008 as well as countless smaller shows around the country over a period of years. He has also presided over many book launches, spoken word sessions and other media events. His recognized contribution to the South African music business is ongoing.

Nick Matzukis is an Advocate of the High Court and is also a very well-known figure in the South African music scene, having played as a musician for many high-profile bands, and having been involved in various music projects over the years.

Nick has, on several occasions been invited to give seminars at SAMRO and other locations for organizations like the Composers’ Association of South Africa. He was a keynote speaker at Moshito 2010 and 2011, the Nelson Mandela Bay International Music Conference, Talking Heads, Born to be Famous (Artist Management) and twice at Music Exchange, an international music conference held in Cape Town. He was invited to give the keynote speech at the Hart van Windhoek Music Workshop in Namibia and is a regular presenter on the Southern African music scene. Nick has, in addition to his two books, written various published articles on topics like Needletime, 360 Degree Contracts, Royalty Streams and Music Contracts in general.

Nick was requested by SAMRO and one of its key divisions, the Performers’ Organisation of South Africa (POSA), to assist in the redrafting of Needletime legislation and amendments to the Performers’ Protection and Copyright Acts. Importantly, Nick was also commissioned to provide expert written legal advice to SAMRO on the settlement of the current Needletime Royalties impasse with SAMPRA, a pending milestone in South African music law.

Nick is a recognized author, lecturer and consultant to the music industry, and has written two music business books, including South Africa’s only reference book on Music Contracts and Music Law. The book is aptly titled “South African Music Law and Contracts – The smart musician’s guide to how the South African Music industry works, how to negotiate the best possible contracts, and how to make money from music in South Africa and overseas”. It gives a thorough overview of the music industry, both in South Africa and abroad and goes on to explain in detail the often perplexing topic of the various royalty streams and music copyrights that exist, thereby enabling the reader to come to a complete understanding of how money is made in the industry, and by whom.

Importantly, Nick’s book and presentations analyze the legal principles that every South African musician should know, especially those pertaining to contracts, copyright and royalties. After explaining the general principles of contract using examples from the music industry, the book then gives a highly practical clause-by-clause explanation of the contents of major music contracts, from the artist’s perspective. Included in these are record deals, licensing contracts, publishing agreements and artist management contracts. The reader is thoroughly prepared to know what to look out for as an artist, and what to negotiate, term by term. (A series of sample contracts is also provided in the book). The law of copyright, as it pertains to music, is also thoroughly dealt with. Nick’s mission in writing the book was to see the end of the days of “the naïve South African musician being prejudiced by the music industry”.

Nick’s qualifications, experience, career and passions are combined in music, law, business and education. This makes him one of the few people truly qualified to mentor young musicians, to write his ground-breaking book, and to lecture on this topic, which is so vital to the development of a dynamic and successful music industry in Africa.

Importantly, Nick still plays the drums and remains an active member of the South African musical fraternity.

The Stirling Theatre is happy to welcome 2 Durban girls, sharing the stage to showcase their original music. The show, put together by the two songstresses themselves, is not ONLY a showcase of their music. It is also a story of how their music brought about the start of a beautiful friendship, which has evolved over the years – From Acquaintance to Mentor to Friend.

Melanie Lowe is no stranger to Durban audiences. She first became a household name after her amazing run on the reality TV show Idols, where she was 2nd runner up. She has performed all across the country alongside international stars and her music has been played on every radio station in the country and she has won a South African Music Award. She has released several successful albums, yet it seems that only now Melanie has discovered who she really is.

November 2011 saw the release of Melanie's 4th studio album to date, I CHOOSE ME, produced by John Ellis of Tree63 fame. A far rockier, more honest look at her life through song, Melanie has stripped herself of all her previous personas and taken a deep, hard look at the woman she has become. This year, Melanie became the first female celebrity to take part in a same-sex marriage after grappling to come to terms with people’s perceptions. After taking such a bold step, she has laid herself bare to the public and has been met with much support and respect by not only the gay community, but the rest of the country as well.

Not only has Melanie got a brand new image to boot, but she also has an inner peace that comes across in a positively fierce and focused way, this is something you will want to see for yourself!

Krystle T, a Durban singer and song writer, will be joining Melanie on stage. Krystle T`s journey has been an interesting one. Resigning from her day job to audition for Idols in 2009 and making Top 35, Krystle started the journey to write her first album, alongside performing in and around Durban in various supper theatre shows. After some complications her album was delayed, but Krystle soon found the right team in producer and fellow performer John Ellis, Greg Bedford, ace guitarist Josh Klynsmith and Tammy Saville and the album Closer to the Fire was made.

Vestido de noiva transparente foi apresentado durante a semana de moda de Berlim

durante os desfiles da semana de moda de Berlim, a grife alemã Kaviar Gauche surpreendeu a todos com um Vestidos de noiva 2012 pra lá de ousado.

A peça deixou o corpo da modelo à mostra, protegido apenas por uma minúscula calcinha e um sutiã, recobertos por um imenso tecido branco completamente transparente.

Por trás da criação do Vestidos estão as estilistas alemãs Alexandra Fischer-Röhler e Johanna Kühl, que vêm ganhando destaque desde a criação da grife, em 2003.

Para divulgar a coleção 2009/2010 da marca, as designers mandaram para a passarela modelos praticamente nuas, mas estrategicamente ostentando os acessórios da grife.

UPCOMING PERFORMANCES: FEBRUARY 2012

SHOUT is fronted by sax man, Dan Shout, who brings his brand of tenor sax-driven, Jazz Fusion. Guitar maestro, Gorm Helfjord, is featured heavily throughout the set along with a very exciting young player, Romy Brauteseth on double bass and none other than Mr. Jonno Sweetman on drums.

SHOUT takes to the stage Tagore’s (49 Trill Road, Observatory) on Wednesday, February 1st from 21:30 – 00:00. Admission is free.

SHOUT hold their residency at Lyra’s (Fountain Centre, Corner of Belmont & Main Road) every Sunday in February to bring you their latest original Jazz-Fusion, featuring new material set to be recorded in Namibia in April 2012. Admission is free.

SHOUT also teams up with trumpeter extraordinaire, LWANDA GOGWANA to bring you a double-bill at Mojo’s (Station Road, Observatory) on Friday, 10th February. R30.

SHOUT performs at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre, on Saturday, 25th February from 17:00 – 18:00. The band will be featuring an explosive set of original material. Admission is free.
