This thought provoking,
multicultural troop of musicians met under rather interesting circumstances at
the UKZN, Durban in
2008. Destiny had them bumping into each other instantaneously, giving them the
opportunity to recognize and realise what they had all been searching for.
Raheem, Dylan, Mo, Kenny
and Ross represent all of the musical and cultural diversity and variety that South
Africa and Durban in
particular has to offer. A well known and fitting newcomer to the band is the
popular P-Kutta.

In the course of just under two
years they have taken their audience by storm and are fast establishing
themselves as the founders of a new sound - T.H.O.T.Sound.

They managed to do what most political and intellectual leaders
have failed to do since the inception of our democracy: Through their music and
message they have successfully integrated their audience into one people, regardless of demographic
differences:They are T.H.O.T.S PEOPLE, who have no colour but share a culture of
music, self respect and respect for each other.

Raheem, front man and vocalist who wrote most of the Lyrics
is also responsible for the name of the band. He explains: ‘In the movie ‘A
Caveman’s Valentine’ a dad expresses that his love for his daughter would drive
him to build tree houses on the sea. We as musicians feel this love for
our music and believe that our creative potential is infinite. We are dedicated
to the kind of music that is beyond the
confines of one
particular genre. We - as Tree Houses On The Sea - have no boundaries.’

THE MUSIC –
CD and LIVE

T.H.O.T.S music can be described as a skilful
mix of old and new with a pinch of South Africa on top. Lovers of Blues, Jazz and
Soul will find them just as exciting and different as young and energetic …….of
Hip Hop and House – they’ve got it all. The Lyrics are riding the waves of
modern communication, the message is an unsinkable little boat that will always
survive the storm and find its destiny. On stage the Band conveys energy,
enthusiasm and creative encouragement.

T.H.O.T.S play DURBAN on a regular basis, (BAT Centre,
BURN, SABC Studios, UKZN etc.) and are busy moving into other areas and venues
to broaden their fan base.

T.H.O.T.S have established
themselves in CAPE TOWN during a stint of live concerts in December 2009 and
are keen to return there for their ever increasing fan base.

The T.H.O.T.S debut album ‘THE
RETURN OF THE BOOK THIEF’, launched in December 2009 is inspired by the bestselling
novel ‘The Book Thief’, written by Marcus Zusak. The book tells the tale of a
young girl who steals books that were intended to be burnt during the Holocaust.
T.H.O.T.S are synonymous with a current uprising of consciousness in our age of
digital communication: ‘A world where questions go unanswered and where the
truth is easily manipulated by the push of a button’.

T.H.O.T.S present a unique and universal mix of musical genres.

On The Edge – the Ryan Calder Band’s latest album – is really a window into the life of a five-piece family. And while the band’s music crosses maskande, blues and jazz boundaries from its acoustic rock foundation, the message consistently leans towards the positive side of life.

Following sold-out shows in 2009, On The Edge maintains the upbeat nature of the Ryan Calder’s debut album, Better Days. Front man and songwriter Ryan’s philosophy is that the band’s show and the music should leave an audience feeling like life is worth living. “The morning after our show, we want people to wake up humming a happy tune,” he says. “I write music with a show in mind. Diversity in terms of rhythm, tempo and sound is something I think about a lot.”

And there is plenty to look forward to with the band’s new album, On The Edge. “The sound, the quality, the depth of lyrics,” cites vocalist Tamlyn.

“It brings a lot of contrast and diversity to the table,” adds pianist Jon Calder. “The songs have many different influences, both in terms of their conception in the songwriting phase and during the actual recording process. The album required much sacrifice and a lot of effort. But we know it is worth it.”

The air of positivity in both the music and lyrics is something which has made the group one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most popular musical acts. “We have fun,” says drummer Rudi Engelbrecht. “The approach has always been one of having the room to enjoy yourself. After all, who would want to listen to a band bored with themselves?”

“The best thing about the RCB is the family spirit. It’s absolutely amazing,” says bassist Roberto Hemmero. This has been a focus of the band, whose music has connected with young and old at each of the performances.

The band, fronted by Ryan, debuted at Splashy Fen in 2006, comprising Rudi Engelbrecht on drums, Roberto Hemmero on bass, Jon Calder on piano and Tamlyn Calder on vocals. From there on, there was no looking back. The RCB went on to share the stage with folk legends Magna Carta as well as prominent SA acts Prime Circle, Plush, Southern Gyspey Queen, Newtown and Guy Buttery. The band has performed at all of KZN’s major music festivals and prominent venues in headline and supporting roles.

Musa Manzini

Musa
Manzini was born at Inanda, north of Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa in
1971 from parents Makhobane and Nomusa Manzini. He then moved to Cape Town in
1986 for high school and university studies. It was later in his high school
days that he first picked up the guitar just as a hobby, but was hooked to it
ever since. "I was faced with having to choose between music as a
full-time career or becoming a lawyer which is the career my parents had carved
for me. At one point, I thought I could be a lawyer who plays the bass".

After
high school Musa enrolled at MAPP Music Academy, an institution for musicians
from previously disadvantaged communities of South Africa. This introduced him
to the basic aspects of music theory and improvisation. He completed a Diploma
in Music and in 1992 he enrolled at the University of Cape Town where he
completed a Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in composition and arrangement.

In 1995, while at UCT, he received the Prof Peter Klatzow Award for composition
and orchestration "It was a big challenge coming from the township and
being introduced to classical music at tertiary level, having to analyse the
music of Bach, Chopin, Mozart, Debussy, Schonberg and other European
composers"

After
graduation, Musa spent three years as a part-time lecturer at UCT instructing
electric and acoustic basses, jazz theory and improvisation to bridging course
students, while at the same time performing and recording as a session musician
around the country with musicians like Rene' MacLean, Jimmy Dludlu, Jonathan
Butler, Gavin Minter, Nhlanhla Magagula, Kevin Gibson, Mark Goliath, Judith
Sephuma, Winston Ngozi, Sipho Mabuse, Menyatso Mathole, Selaelo Selota, Joe
McBride, UCT Jazz Orchestra and many other muso's at that period.

Manzini's
style and sound has been honed by the multi-facetted Cape Town music scene,
mostly the townships of Gugulethu, Langa, Mitchell's Plain and Khayelitsha. In
2000 Musa released his debut recording entitled "New Reflections"
through BMG Records Africa , which earned him a SAMA nomination for Best
Contemporary Album, and was at the same time introduced into the film and
television industry by Mfundi Vundla, where he worked on daily drama series
like Backstage and Generations as film scorer and musical director. In 2002,
Musa released his second album “Tributes and Memories” with Gallo Jazz, which
has received extensive airplay and recognition nationally and internationally.
Tributes and Memories was also nominated for Best Contemporary Album at the
2004 SAMA awards.

Musa
has performed at North Sea Jazz Festival, New Orleans, Joy of Jazz, Muscat,
Jazzathon, Arts Alive as well as many other club gigs, functions and musicians'
workshops locally and abroad. The peak of all performances was sharing stage
with four bassists during the North Sea in 2001, myself, Marcus Miller, Sipho
Gumede and Victor Bailey.
Musa Manzini has released a brand new album entitled "My Bass" in
2005 and got on the road for the first time introducing the bass to the people,
as well as studying towards a Post-graduate Diploma in Marketing Management
through University of South Africa.

Manzini
continued working extensively in the television/film industry as music director,
composer and producer for Thetha Msawawa II, broadcast on SABC and recently the
popular Magic Cellar, an animated children's series which has already scooped
27 Awards Internationally. He released his fourth album entitled "Simply
Life" in 2006 featuring the popular hit song "Esikhawini" and
many more. The album was nominated for 2 SA Music Awards.

Musa
Manzini has just survived two brain operations to remove a tumour, benign
luckily, and is back on stage. Musa, one of South Africa’s great bass players,
is now back to the live music scene with a bang. After his flourishing music
career was temporarily inconvenienced, fans can now look forward to his usual
thunderous bass performances. The prolific bassist has now fully recovered from
the two craniotomies which had left him temporarily paralyzed and lost the use
of his left hand. He has gone through lengthy physiotherapy programs and had to
relearn everything which was lost through the operations.

String Symmetry

String Symmetry is a guitar duet that focuses on Spanish / Flamenco music. Classical pieces and acoustic ballads also form part of our reportoire, and the latter inevitably has a Spanish flavour…. Our music has been described as romantic, energetic and refreshing.

String Symmetry is currently working on a Spanish guitar CD that contains mostly, original tracks written by String Symmetry. A Christmas album is also on the “to do” list that will feature familiar Christmas carols but with a unique Spanish touch. Either of these should be on the shelves later this year!!

String Symmetry was formed in 2009 and we have been performing at weddings, functions, restaurants and at the local church since then. Conrad has been playing guitar since age 14 and studied guitar at Music School in Pretoria focussing mainly on jazz. This jazz influence gives the Spanish music of String Symmetry a unique sound, making the music somewhat unpredictable at times.

Conrad has a natural affinity for the interesting rhythms that Flamenco music has to offer and mainly focuses thereon in performances, also adding interring percussion that ensures a truly Spanish experience.

Letitia plays the guitar and keyboard and recently took up the violin and particularly enjoys composing for String Symmetry and focuses mainly on the melodies of the pieces, although she often takes over the rhythm section to allow Conrad to express his creativity with some improvisation sections in their music.

String Symmetry is planning to travel to Spain later this year to experience Spain first hand and will no doubt, share our experience with you in our music that will be born after our trip!

Indidginus

Michael Martin has been playing didgeridoo since 1996. His first real foray into dance music came in 1998 when he attended the Megadog Beach Festival in Cornwall after returning from a period of work and travel in Tanzania. Michael was so inspired by what he heard and experienced, that he decided to incorporate his didg playing into this style of music.

At first he started out by playing along with various techno and trance DJ's (originally under the name Deviant Didg) at squat parties and clubs in London like The Fridge, Club 414, The Pleasure Rooms, Tyssen Street, and The Drome. After a year or so he got involved with Koru (a drum and bass group based in Brixton).

Michael played with them for a few months, mostly around London, but also at festivals like the Lizard Eclipse in Cornwall. This introduced him to the production side of things and he was hooked. He didn't like being a passive member of the band who "just played didg". He wanted to actively create tracks from start to end. His stumbling block was money - studio equipment doesn't come cheap.... So with that (& one or two other things) in mind he took out a loan, trained as a software developer, earned some money, bought some gear, started writing his own compositions & Indidginus was born. Shortly after he joined up with another drum and bass live PA (Impact) and gigged with them. This was fun for a while, but he found himself limited to being "the didg player" again, so decided to call it a day.

Following a Halloween party in Bristol in 2001, at which his psytrance live PA OOOD was playing, Michael got to know Colin Bennun. The two became friends & started writing tracks together from time to time. He has had the good fortune to work with talented guitarist, Joe Weinstock, who features on several Indidginus tracks. He is also involved in 2 ongoing collaborations with Ishq (Matt Hillier) going under the Open System & Octophonic (also featuring the late Jake Stephenson) monikers.

Michael has played at various events in the UK, South Africa & elsewhere in the world. In February 2004 he emigrated to South Africa, where he has had his music featured in a couple of TV series, & written soundtracks for several TV commercials, a documentary & an independent film called Cognition Factor - featuring a collaboration with Colin Angus (The Shamen) & additional music by Alex Paterson & Dom Beken of The Orb/High Frequency Bandwidth & Merv Pepler of Eat Static/Ozric Tentacles.

He has also remixed various other artists including Tripswitch, The Vanguard & High Frequency Bandwidth.

Michael makes extensive use of the slide didgeridoo in his unique & eminently danceable live performances.

'The Tea Party' is a new outdoor festival, aiming to create an event firmly rooted in the eclectic, artistic and humorous side of life, a cultural mash-up weaved together with a glittering thread of freaky funk, booting world beats, jiving rock 'n roll, swinging jazz, up-beat salsa, big beating electro breaks, honky-tonk, tech-house, flamjangled folk, and anything that 'swings' or 'grooves'.

'The Tea Party' is first and foremost about an experience. Themed area's, dressing up, performance art, over the top theatrics, absurd activities and whatever else can be thrown into the mix to create a transformed reality where you can be whatever you want to be!

'The Tea Garden' is open from Saturday morning till late and hosts 'The Great Waltz' (a world record breaking attempt!!) a little after sunset. Sunday will host 'Le Picnic' as we continue to shift sideways through a relaxed daytime party aimed to uplift and leave you feeling fresh. Nighttime escapades on Saturday night take place in 'The Munged Bean Shebeen', and other smaller night time parties.

How
it all began:

Craig Mischief
was born in Port Elizabeth
and as far back as he can remember he took part in every variety show and
talent contest that came his way. At School he took music as a subject and
after leaving school, packed his bags and left for Johannesburg to fulfil his dream of becoming
a professional entertainer. Initially a three-piece comedy band called “WHITE
MISCHIEF” was formed, with Craig as the front man. After a very successful run
in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth, Craig decided about ten years ago that a
solo career as a stand-up comedian was the ultimate dream.

One of his
proudest moments, was being part of a fundraiser for 13 year old
heart-transplant patient Candice Krummek, who has since had a successful
operation and is enjoying life in London,
and has much to thank Craig for. His largest audience to date was at the Port
Elizabeth Splash Festival where Craig performed successfully before a baying
capacity crowd of 75 000 in 1997.

a registered non-profit organization, Business Against Crime (Eastern Cape) relies on the generosity of
the business community and individuals to sustain a
variety of crime-fighting projects. We also try to raise as much
funding as possible by holding special events, such as a recent
"Bikers' Brunch" at the Port Alfred
Surf & Ski-boat Club (Sunday 31st August 2008), where Craig Mischief performed his usual
hilarious sketches and impersonations. Despite the foul weather
(easily the worst wind and rain encountered this year), an intrepid group of ±
20 bikers attended the event. We are grateful to Craig for having given us a concession-priced performance;
his side-splitting repertoire outweighed the glum weather, and we look
forward to a bigger, better biking fraternity function next time.

Irvine is an independent rock band formed in 2006 by brothers Bob and Chris Thorpe. The following year the band recorded their debut EP, 'This Is Tomorrow', which gained interest from both fans and media. Since then the band has spent much of their time performing, writing and recording in London, England.

For Irvine the last three years of work have led them to the sound of their new EP 'Raising Weathered Sails', which captures the essence of the band's musical philosophy of creating powerful original music that is easily accessible yet still maintains a high degree of artistic integrity. The band's emphasis on strong melody is balanced by the progressive undertones in their arrangements, rhythms and chord structures, drawing on influences ranging from artists such as Jimmy Eat World and Jimi Hendrix to Cold War Kids and Death Cab For Cutie. The intensity of Irvine's live performances is a testament to this careful balance, constantly swaying between the beautifully melodic and the chaotically abstract.

It’s not surprising that when Collin and Bongi Damans sing together, the sound is sensational! Having earned first and second position in one of the country’s first reality television shows – ‘Gospel Star’ in 2005, they are each gifted musicians. And together, they are phenomenal. As a further sign of their wonderful harmony, these two are also husband and wife, allowing them to be in tune with each others souls and voices. With a history of almost 20 years between them in the music industry, the two finally feel the time is right for them to launch the duo – Collin and Bongi. “I’ve always loved singing,” enthuses Bongi. “When I finished school, I couldn’t see myself doing any other work, so I enrolled to study music. Over the past few years, I’ve sang backing vocals for legendary South Africans such as Vuyo Mokoena and Pastor Benjamin Dube. But when I sing with my husband it’s different I get an unwavering sense of purpose and accomplishment.” Collin also has illustrious credentials including singing with Joyous Celebration for 2 years and with renowned artists Selaela Selota, Keke and Ntando to name a few. Collin however only discovered an interest in music in his teen years. “When I was growing up in Mamelodi, it was a big fashion to learn the lyrics of songs and sing along whenever they came on to radio,” he laughs. “Like all my friends, I became crazy about the Boys II Men track – On Bended Knees. Soon after I learnt all the words, I started focusing on the actual music and to my surprise found that I could hold a tune pretty well. The more I sang, the more confident I became. After I won my first school singing contest, the pathway to a career in music just started unfolding.” In 2003, when Collin went to a Pastor Benjamin Dube concert he happened to cross paths with Bongi who was one of the back-up singers. Like his surprising discovery of singing talent, this chance encounter would place him on a destined journey. The couple got married three years later, and now have a gorgeous 2 year old son. Although they’ve faced challenges over the past few years, they are most grateful to have each other and their baby boy. As Christians, they believe everything in their lives has been ordained by God, including their debut 14 track gospel album entitled “Makadunyiswe”. Signed on by newly formed Jaziel Music Productions and produced by the talented duo being the Jaziel Brother who need no introduction in the music industry, the offering features the blend of inspiring lyrics, technical excellence and professional delivery that characterise the label owner – the Jaziel Brothers. Their ‘thoroughly South African’ CD features songs in Sotho, Xhosa, Zulu and English. “We could easily have gone for an American Baptist sound,” explains Collin, “but we wanted songs that our parents, friends and siblings could relate to.” As such, there are a few classic hymns, but most of the songs are fresh material written by the couple. “We felt it was important to connect with people by sharing our experiences, thoughts and hopes of the beautiful but challenging country we all live in,” says Bongi. But don’t expect the music to simply reflect the troubles we face, because the message throughout is one of hope. “There is a way to overcome any hardship,” shares Collin. “Many years ago I had two near fatal experiences that changed my life. I was shot in a house robbery on Christmas Day, and a short while later was run over by a truck while standing on the road side. I wondered why bad things were happening to me, but instead of focusing on the negative, I realised the positive- that my life had been spared twice! Since then I’ve learnt to acknowledge God for every day that he grants me.” These days Collin and Bongi’s hearts are filled with gratitude – especially because their dream of releasing an album together has been realised. “There is no one else, I’d rather be singing with other than Collin,” muses Bongi. “He’s a great husband, and with his wonderful resonant tenor, also a great music partner.” Fully committed to each other and their newly launched musical venture, the couple aim for harmony at work and at play!

When they all began to learn the joy of playing music
together, it quickly became a platform to vent feeling, feeling that is true,
powerful and above all sincere.

Earl Grey and Croquet – it is a mindset of music, not a self
indulged one – but one that should be shared and enjoyed, as in essence, all
that lies at the core of this band is just good people playing good songs –
with a little intensity and emotion thrown in.

They have a following that enjoy their unique sound and
energetic stage presence. Their stage act is professional and led by the
talented Laurie Sloan. The music entertains and takes the audience on a trip of
highs and lows of easy-to-listen to and innovative music. The band covers songs
like Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird, Kings Of Leon – King Of The Rodeo and Bob
Dylan – Like a Rolling Stone.

The style of their music varies; it incorporates folk with
blues, alternative rock with psychedelic rock and other styles that just seem
to fit.

Richard Stonier described their music as: “A mixture between the guitar-based rock of Neil Young,

Strange name, yes, but impressive music. Once again, pretty fresh music on the
SA scene. As they themselves said, they have Pink Floyd and Neil Young
influences. Their music does reflect that, and I found myself very intrigued by
it.”

“Some of the songs did spill over a bit
onto the pop-rock side of things every now and again, but in general, I found
them to be pretty original. The songs were largely instrumental... I would have
liked some more vocals, but honestly, the music is enough to keep one’s
interest...I am really interested to see how this band will develop in the future.

Imagine a City Hall which is the hub of a vibrant cultural community. Imagine a place of memories, restored to its former glory. Imagine a venue where every citizen can have a say in what they want this space to be.

The Imagine City Hall Initiative is aimed at inspiring the people of Cape Town and beyond to register their support for the development of the Cape Town City Hall as a dedicated cultural venue.

Imagine City Hall was born as an idea between the Africa Centre, Cape MIC, the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) and Cape Town Partnership’s Creative Cape Town programme: organisations with a vision, audience base, resources and the critical support of various stakeholders to make the City Hall function as a dynamic project. The key aim of project is to garner support for the City Hall as dedicated premier cultural venue for all Capetonians, which should ideally forward the broader arts and heritage of the city and the continent.

Since 1996, the Cape Town Partnership has been working on lobbying government, carrying out research, developing a business plan and funding proposals, and establishing structures (with the support of former Mayor Helen Zille) to manage and redevelop the space as a dynamic cultural space suited for the 21st century. Now, after the Cape Town Library’s move into the refurbished Drill Hall in 2009, the space it had occupied for close to 40 years is ready for an injection of new life.

The first glimpse of its possibilities will come when the Africa Centre uses the grand old spaces for the Spier Contemporary art exhibition from 13 March – 14 May 2010. The exhibition is designed to use the space in a dynamic way to attract and engage both seasoned art critics and those who have never attended an art exhibition. For the duration of the exhibition, the venue will also house a cafe and a shop, as well as hosting regular events by outside initiatives as well as workshops for children.

The re-imagining of the space will take into account the important heritage of the building. The classic lines of the 1905 Italian Rennaissance building, juxtaposed with the exhibit of contemporary artworks, provide a natural focus for the Central City’s cultural renaissance.

The partners have turned to social media to engage citizens in the project. A Facebook group has been set up at http://bit.ly/9WDKAR. There are already close to 500 fans, and their comments reflect their wide support for the project.

Musician Tina Schouw wrote: “I think this is a great initiative. I fully endorse the City Hall's role as a cultural hub... it could be the place to inspire and grow upcoming artists through the sharing of creative tools for their development.”

The group also inspires people who performed in the Hall as youngsters, such as Richard Martin who says he remembers “our school band at Florida Primary playing at the City Hall in the 70's...I later returned to play a brass concert with BBSA (Moravian Brass)...funny this was also the place where the Arch (Tutu) and Jonathan Butler appeared together in the 90's with the same hairstyle...”.

Joe Bloggs writes: “This is an awesome building and sad to see it in the state it’s currently in. It’s in the city centre and hence it should be a symbolic central melting pot of culture utilised by the greater public of Cape Town. Concerts, events & exhibitions is a fine starting point.”
