RipCord

Perhaps best described as a rock band with folk tendencies, this five piece band manages to blend the acoustic sounds of piano and guitar with a good dose of rocking rhythm thrown in for good measure.

RipCord gets its name from the fact that almost everyone in the band skydives. Some of the reckless abandon which is required to launch oneself out of a perfectly functioning aircraft is perhaps a crucial ingredient in the mix that makes RipCord. Seemingly opposite sides of the spectrum combine musically to bring something new and unique forward that has a little piece of everyone in it. RipCord has a passion for making original music and with 3 writers in the band, it makes it interesting, but also creates some subtle style shifts which ultimately leads to a more dynamic performance.

With Joy on drums and Andre on bass, the rock aspect is taken care of with a few funk-bass undercurrents. Jacques on Piano and Mel on vocals balance this with a more folky acoustic sound and Mike (the recently added fifth band member) has a foot in both camps playing both acoustic and electric guitars.

Each band member has their own musical influences including Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Seether, Karen Zoid, Just Jinger to name a few. There is even the odd classical undertone.

RipCord have been bringing their original tunes to Cape Town for three years and are still loving every minute! A must see, this slightly acoustic, somewhat folky rock band has something special to offer, and a sound which they affectionately dubbed “FROCK”.
