'The Tea Party' is a new outdoor festival, aiming to create an event firmly rooted in the eclectic, artistic and humorous side of life, a cultural mash-up weaved together with a glittering thread of freaky funk, booting world beats, jiving rock 'n roll, swinging jazz, up-beat salsa, big beating electro breaks, honky-tonk, tech-house, flamjangled folk, and anything that 'swings' or 'grooves'.

'The Tea Party' is first and foremost about an experience. Themed area's, dressing up, performance art, over the top theatrics, absurd activities and whatever else can be thrown into the mix to create a transformed reality where you can be whatever you want to be!

'The Tea Garden' is open from Saturday morning till late and hosts 'The Great Waltz' (a world record breaking attempt!!) a little after sunset. Sunday will host 'Le Picnic' as we continue to shift sideways through a relaxed daytime party aimed to uplift and leave you feeling fresh. Nighttime escapades on Saturday night take place in 'The Munged Bean Shebeen', and other smaller night time parties.

Amanda Tiffin

Jazz Composition and Performance at the University of Cape Town. She received her Masters Degree with distinction, and has gone on to become one of Cape Town's best-loved vocalist-pianists.

Amanda has performed extensively in South Africa, and more recently in London, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and as a jazz artist in Japan. She has toured with music theatre shows to countries such as Mauritius, Bahrain and the U.A.E.

Amanda released her debut album, Who Am I? in 2005, and is due to release her second CD, an all-jazz recording in 2008.

A versatile artist, Amanda has performed in varying genres: from Musical theatre and stage shows to intimate jazz concerts. She has produced several of her own successful theatre shows, to critical acclaim, and has been musical director and arranger for numerous theatre productions in South Africa. Amanda has featured as a soloist on the National Jazz Festival in Grahamstown in 2004 and 2006. She is a regular and popular performer in all of Cape Town's top jazz venues as both vocalist and pianist. She also works as an arranger, orchestrator and composer.

What started off as a creative outlet with no initial intent or plan in place other than making music they love, Unit.r have since developed into one of the tightest and most loved acts in Cape Town. With a real passion for music, fun and the dancefloor, Unit.r’s sound has grown into a kaleidoscope of sonic genres packed into a hugely dynamic live set.

UNIT.R is a 4 piece band who combine elements of electro, rock, punk and folk into a live set that goes beyond the traditional.

Synthesisers and sequencers combined with live bass guitar, acoustic guitar, drums and vocals to produce a fresh sound whilst aimed squarely at the dance floor.

Their sound is all about the synthesis of human and electronic, the marriage between the spontaneous soul of live performance and an intrinsic love of music production and song writing.

They released an EP ‘Two by Four’ with 5 tracks, the release is a showcase of the diversity of their sound and runs the gamut from acoustic folk to electro punk to indie. A music video was commissioned for their single ‘Clap’ by Fly on The Wall productions in collaboration with Ontwerp (the post production company responsible for the visual effects on the LARK moonlight music video). The video is a perfect visual representation of the band’s attitude and irreverence: paper fish and mammals careen around the city of Cape Town while the band shrunken to fit performs on the cities post boxes, garbage cans and pavements.

In October 2007 they released their second music video for the track ‘It’s All About’ in association with LEVIS Young Guns, Oppikoppi and Chasing Migada Productions.

In November 2007 the band went into studio to record their first full length album and came out 3 months later with their 11 track album titled “Phosphenes” (when you push hard onto your eye balls the colour illusions that start to develop in a kaleidoscopic pattern are called Phosphenes).

“We have been playing most of these songs live for some time, and we just had to see how far we could expand them in a different context, without losing the immediacy and energy of the live performance...”

The album is a culmination of 2 years of touring and aims to capture the versatile and highly energised live show. The album design was done by local art hero Kronk (http://www.myspace.com/iamkronk), who undertook to create an intricate look and feel befitting their quirky yet meticulously crafted sound.

Matt has been operating under the internationally recognised trance alias 'Artifakt' with Timecode Records and has performed all over the world, recently back from his US tour Matt has joined the rest of the band in studio to record their debut full length album.

Goran is co-founder of the UNIT.R concept (which began as a record label) with Justin. He has DJ'd and performed alongside electro legends like Miss Kittin and Ectomorph and is co owner of the music and sound production workshop SONOS STUDIOS with Justin and Paul Ressel aka Humanizer from LARK.

Aleksandar, a multi-instrumentalist and is not only a uniquely talented drummer, but is skilled at guitar, bass, piano and a turntables. He has been featured in music documentaries and recently included on DJ Redwood's latest compilation as Leks Mano.

The Band

This slick, sophisticated jazz quartet consists of bass guitar, drums, vocals and piano. Inspired by Marcus Miller, Cris on bass carved a niche for himself in Boston (USA) playing alongside Berklee jazz graduates while Dave on drums, who descends from a family of drumming tradition, draws his inspiration from Steve Gadd. Both jazz students at the UCT College of Music, Warren's velvet voice continues to be fine tuned through the study of classical and jazz voice techniques while Blake's passionate piano takes him into his final year of his music degree.

SHOUT is fronted by sax man, Dan Shout, who brings his brand of tenor sax-driven, Jazz Fusion. Guitar maestro, Gorm Helfjord, is featured heavily throughout the set along with a very exciting young player, Romy Brauteseth on double bass and none other than Mr. Jonno Sweetman on drums.

SHOUT takes to the stage Tagore’s (49 Trill Road, Observatory) on Wednesday, February 1st from 21:30 – 00:00. Admission is free.

SHOUT hold their residency at Lyra’s (Fountain Centre, Corner of Belmont & Main Road) every Sunday in February to bring you their latest original Jazz-Fusion, featuring new material set to be recorded in Namibia in April 2012. Admission is free.

SHOUT also teams up with trumpeter extraordinaire, LWANDA GOGWANA to bring you a double-bill at Mojo’s (Station Road, Observatory) on Friday, 10th February. R30.

I’m not sure what network this was supposed to be for, or who was being showcased to, but with such an impressive lineup especially in the middle of a week that bridges other big events on both ends, I didn’t care.

I’m starting to get a little picky about what bands I follow, and which gigs I attend, basically because I’m bored of seeing and hearing all the same stuff over and over again. So what attracted me to this gig was that despite hearing many good things about them, I had only seen one out of the five of the acts on the bill before. Also that it had a fairly diverse range of genres being presented. Variety is the spice of life.

Another factor attracting me was that 60% of the acts also had pretty female leads. First up was Louise Day. Tonight she was there solo and of course charged with the difficult responsibility of warming up the still-in-infant-form crowd. (I mean that the numbers in the audience had yet to start growing, not that they were all babies, just clearing that up.) She was charming enough though, and eased us into the evening with her sweet melodies, though it seemed to be fairly average singer-songwriter stuff, and I wonder if having the rest of her band with her helps to elevate it much.

Following her is the much talked about machineri. Critics and fans have been hyping this band for a while now, yet I hadn’t heard anything of them that made me eager enough to rush out to one of their gigs. After reading a recent interview with them though and discovering their straight-up, old school attitude and approach to rock and roll, I was now excited at the opportunity to finally experience their performance. Sannie Fox appears quite a formidable presence as a frontwoman, and I am indeed impressed by their raw, don’t give a shit aesthetic. These are indeed some talented musicians and I enjoy the darker influences of Johnny Cash coupled with that of the energy of Led Zeppelin in their songs, though I can’t help like feel that there is still a little something missing. Perhaps just a touch of spectacle would grab peoples’ attention more, but I could be wrong.

Taxi Violence carry on the show in a similar vein, as their sound also falls into what I like to call the meat-and-potatoes rock category. In the past, I’ve never been a huge fan, not finding their songs particularly interesting, though I have to admit I have still ended up seeing them perform a number of times, and their sets are consistently good. Frontman George is always up and down the stage with great enthusiasm and the instruments are to my ears pretty darn tight. Tonight I am pleased to see them also joined by Nic from one of my fave local bands The Sleepers, on guitar.

Headlining is Goodluck, who have also garnered a lot of attention lately with some big radio hits. I’m not terribly big on dance music and to me it had seemed as if this group had simply been riding the successful sounds of Goldfish and Flash Republic. I’m not sure why this had put me off though, as whenever I have seen those other two acts at festivals, their stage shows are always great fun and guaranteed to get the crowd going, and Goodluck turns out to be no different, though maybe on a slightly smaller scale just yet. Sexy singer Juliet Harding really engages with her band and the audience, at one point even stepping out into the crowd and dancing with them without disrupting the flow of the song. There are a few moments where I feel like they lose a bit of momentum, but then they pick it right back up again and smack you in the face with it. I have to agree with my friend who turns to me near the end of their set and says “I should get to live dance gigs more often.”

To back that statement up, the night is rounded off by DJ duo Pascal & Pearce.
Due to unfortunate circumstances involving my contact lenses I was unable to stay for their full set, but what I did see was pretty cool, these guys certainly looked like they were enjoying themselves and the leftover crowd was responding accordingly. I’m not sure how they compare to other DJs but they sounded fairly hardcore to me.

Whatever this “showcase” was about, it was a fantastic selection of artists and a wonderful reminder for me that there are always fresh and exciting acts new acts to be discovered if you just make a point of getting out there and seeing what they have to offer.
