'The Tea Party' is a new outdoor festival, aiming to create an event firmly rooted in the eclectic, artistic and humorous side of life, a cultural mash-up weaved together with a glittering thread of freaky funk, booting world beats, jiving rock 'n roll, swinging jazz, up-beat salsa, big beating electro breaks, honky-tonk, tech-house, flamjangled folk, and anything that 'swings' or 'grooves'.

'The Tea Party' is first and foremost about an experience. Themed area's, dressing up, performance art, over the top theatrics, absurd activities and whatever else can be thrown into the mix to create a transformed reality where you can be whatever you want to be!

'The Tea Garden' is open from Saturday morning till late and hosts 'The Great Waltz' (a world record breaking attempt!!) a little after sunset. Sunday will host 'Le Picnic' as we continue to shift sideways through a relaxed daytime party aimed to uplift and leave you feeling fresh. Nighttime escapades on Saturday night take place in 'The Munged Bean Shebeen', and other smaller night time parties.

Gatecrasher Summer Music Festival brought to you by Soundscape hits South Africa in February 2012 for a spectacular outdoor international electronic music event at Cape Town Ostrich Farm.Gatecrasher is an international clubbing brand made famous for its dance music events in the UK. The Gatecrasher Summer Music Festival takes place on the 4th and 5th of February 2012, featuring Paul Van Dyk and many other artists. Revelers can expect a weekend of extravagant, exciting and exhilarating entertainment.

In the world of electronic dance music, names don’t come any bigger than Germany’s Paul Van Dyk. The maestro behind classic anthems like “For an Angel”, “Words”, “Another Way”, “Beautiful Place” and “Forbidden Fruit” is set to rock the festival along with over 50 supporting national DJs and live acts. Dean Fuel, Headroom, Haezer, Niskerone, Broken Toy, Jason47, Digital Divas, Grimehouse and Marvin and many others will be keeping the party going all weekend.

The Gatecrasher Summer Music Festival is devoted to celebration, while also creating an alternate dance reality space for partygoers. The sizzling weekend will consist of jet-skis, paragliding; paintball, safe and secure camping, live saxophonist, percussionists and many other forms of entertainment. Key features include a meet and greet with Paul Van Dyk, three arenas including the massive Gatecrasher main arena, multiple VIP zones and a VIP Village. Cocktail and martini bars, swimming, quad biking, food market, massive turbo sound, lighting shows, aerialists, world-class sound and lighting production, chic décor and many other highlights add to the weekend’s celebrations.

“Safety is paramount and Soundscape have made precaution for safe and secure parking for 5000 cars. Security, medical, fire and environmental personnel are on site as well as clean showers and toilets. The event is held in natural settings where everyone is bound by a common love of music, and can express their inner selves freely”, says Mark Abrahams, Director of Soundscape.

Pre-booked weekend passes cost R280 for general entry and R350 for VIP, with ticket sales available at Computicket. Weekend passes at the door cost R300 for general entry and R400 for VIP. VIP ticket holders will have access to multiple VIP covered areas, including VIP staging for premium views of the Gatecrasher main stage. There is also an exclusive separate VIP entrance into the Gatecrasher Summer Music Festival. The VIP Village comprises of Bedouin tents, luxurious seating, stylish bars, amazing sound and state-of-the-art lighting. 7th annual South African HORRORFEST Film Festival & Halloween Event

Growing into the country's ultimate Halloween event covering indie, new & classic movies, short films, music, literature and a range of Halloween festivities, 2011 marks the annual South African HORRORFEST's lucky 7th year!

Almost each of the exciting feature films and short films make their South African theatrical premieres. The Makabra Ensemble will also debut their Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde movie soundtrack performance, live to the screening of this 1920 silent classic. This year's event also sees the first South African made feature film entry, Night Drive (on Halloween night), with another local connection in the shape of SA-born director Richard Stanley contributing a chapter to the 6-part Horror anthology The Theatre Bizarre, which will close the event on 4 November.
In addition to the colourful audience Halloween dress-up event linked up with the live soundtrack show, there will be an Alternative Market, plus the Cape Town Zombie Walk.
The best short film production prize from Visual Impact and HD Hub is now no longer reserved for local entries alone, but can be won by any of the entries from around the world.
Audience prizes and give-aways will happen across the event, incl. DVDs, Paranormal Activity 3 branded flash drives & iPhone covers, body piercing vouchers, gourmet coffee, books etc.

This classic 1920 silent version was directed by John S. Robertson, and stars John Barrymore, Charles Lane, Martha Mansfield, Brandon Hurst.
Accompanying the visuals will be the premiere of the new live soundtrack performance by THE MAKABRA ENSEMBLE, their 6th movie scored to date.
As one of the HorrorFest highlights, booking is essential, and the show will include the audience Halloween dress-up competition.

Shot in Transylvania, Whitby, London and Dublin this documentary tells the true story of Bram Stoker and his gothic novel Dracula.
The film is produced in association with the Transylvanian Society of Dracula and features interviews with leading international Dracula experts. Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated is a mass collaborative artistic re-envisioning of George A. Romero's 1968 cult classic. International artists and animators were invited to select scenes from the film and reinvent them through their artwork.
Open to all styles, media and processes the results ran the gamut with scenes created in everything from puppet theater to CGI, hand drawn animation to flash, and oil paintings to tattoos.
This cacophony of works was organized and curated across the original film's time line in order to create a completely original motion picture track made entirely out of art. BLOODY PARCHMENT Literary Chapter:

It’s October, which means it’s time to carve your pumpkins and stock up on sweet treats for Halloween. The South African HORRORFEST’s BLOODY PARCHMENT literary chapter will open the 7th annual instalment of Cape Town’s ultimate Halloween festival on October 26th.
It will once again take place at the Book Lounge - 71 Roeland Street, 5.30pm for 6pm. Dress up as your favourite ghoul, witch, wizard or monster and join us for a literary evening of chills and shivers as local authors such as Lauren Beukes, Sarah Lotz and SA Partridge, among others, share dark, macabre or downright spooky tales. In addition we also bring together the masterminds of local horror in a panel, so here’s your chance to hear what they have to say about what special brand of terror South Africans are bound to unleash in print and film. As if this isn’t enough incentive to attend, prizes will be awarded to the best costumes (incl. Penguin books and Phantom Sambuca).
The film chapter of the HORRORFEST and alternative market will be hosted at The Labia Theatre (Orange Street, Gardens).

UP’s Department of Music is 50! Concert

In celebration of half a century of musical excellence the Department of Music will be hosting a festival of concerti to earmark this auspicious occasion. The University of Pretoria Symphony Orchestra is an ensemble of young, vibrant and highly talented University of Pretoria students as well as professional musicians that annually showcases their phenomenal flair. On Friday, 14 October 2011, they will be presenting this gala concert, “Smashing Symphonic Soloists”.

Amongst others, the programme will include movements from masterpieces such as Guilmant’s Organ Concerto No 1, played expertly by Jaco Prinsloo, whose first instrument is the French Horn. Bruch’s famous Concerto for Violin No 1 and Dvorak’s Romance will be played by two members of the first violin section, Carin Jansen van Vuuren and Mia Björkman respectively.

Jaco van Staden, the orchestra’s principal horn player will be playing Vinter’s Hunter’s Moon. A Concerto for Two Clarinets by Krommer will be played by Junnan Sun and Visser Liebenberg and the orchestra will be performing something quite different in the form of Pryor’s Concerto for Trombone and Wind Band, played by the principal trombonist, Konrad Boshoff.

Tshepo Tsotetsi, the orchestra’s resident saxophone player, will be making his orchestral debut with UPSO as a composer and soloist, playing his own work, Flowers and Rainbows.

To top off the night’s festivities, a celestial surprise awaits! The concert will take place on 14 October 2011 at 19:00 in the Musaion, University of Pretoria Main Campus. World Fringe Festival

The World Fringe Alliance, comprising eight Fringe Festivals from four continents, was launched this week at the Amsterdam Fringe Festival and Grahamstown was named as the Chair and the host city of the Alliance’s first global meeting in 2012.

The Alliance, which has a collective annual audience in excess of 1 million, aims to promote ‘creative pathways’ for artists to move between member Fringe Festivals as well as to present a collective offering to global sponsors and funders.

“We’re all passionate about the concept of “Fringe”, which is characterised by open access stages, independent, fresh artistic voices pushing artistic boundaries, and a vibrancy and energy that contributes to a magical experience for audiences and artists,” Tony Lankester, CEO of the Grahamstown National Arts Festival and the inaugural Chairman of the Alliance said at the launch. “We believe that this is the foundation of a strong relationship among our member Fringes and presents a hugely compelling and attractive market for sponsors and brands which match this spirit of innovation,” he continued.

The member Fringe Festivals are Grahamstown; Adelaide and Perth in Australia; New York and Hollywood in the USA; Amsterdam; Prague; and Brighton.

The keynote speaker at the launch was Josephine Burns, whose company BOP Consulting has recently completed a large-scale economic and social impact study of the 12 festivals in Edinburgh. She applauded the launch of the Alliance as a “long-overdue” initiative that will begin to open up arts tourism opportunities for the benefit of all member countries.

“Our study has shown that the Edinburgh Festivals have a value to the economy of £261-million a year – the equivalent of creating 5242 full-time jobs. There is a massive global appetite for Festivals and other creative events and the Alliance is well positioned to begin harnessing some of this,” Burns said.

Benefits of the relationship between the Fringe Festivals are already being felt, with two productions from the Amsterdam Fringe being presented in Grahamstown during the 2011 National Arts Festival, and with South Africa reciprocating by sending two of its Standard Bank Ovation Award winners to the Netherlands where they attracted the attention and interest of other countries in the Alliance. The exchange will continue in 2012 with Perth, Amsterdam, Prague and Grahamstown looking for ways to create a wider global circuit for artists.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming the member Fringes to Grahamstown during the 2012 National Arts Festival,” Lankester said. “Hosting them in South Africa will give our artists the unprecedented opportunity to showcase their work to the other Fringes. We already attract a large number of international promoters and festivals to shop for work in Grahamstown, this adds another layer to those programmes.”

The National Arts Festival is sponsored by Standard Bank, The Eastern Cape Government, The National Arts Council, The National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, The Sunday Independent and M Net.
