MylifE is a registered foundation working with at risk youth and children in Cape Town, South Africa ‐ those living on the street without hope or support. MylifE was established in 2002, and since its inception has successfully healed over 105 youth, moving them from the city’s pavements into full‐time jobs, independence and a ‘normal’ life. It has given hope where there was none… The track MylifE is a testament to that… and a mantra for just about anyone who finds themselves in that dark and lonely place (whether it by a street alley or lost in a crowd.)

Latest Social Development figures show that more than 50 per cent of those in substance abuse treatment centres in the Western Cape are under 20 years old, and have methamphetamine (tik) as their primary drug of choice. Across South Africa, some 42 per cent of the prison population is under 25 years of age. These are just some of the statistics MylifE aims to change

MylifE has seen more than 100 youth pass through its doors in the past four years. Essentially we have built a "village" in a town environment; the successes that have been achieved can truly be seen as miracles. No other organisation can demonstrate success at this level, working with hardened youth in the age bracket of 17 to 25.

The Pay‐it‐Forward concept is already working, as is our Train‐the‐Trainer belief. Now MylifE wishes to move the core of its activities to a rural environment, reaching out to larger groups of youth, while still maintaining its Cape Town centre for Phase 1 Intervention - the first part of the healing process. Let our youth speak for themselves to tell you how MylifE has changed their lives forever as they are the MylifE Foundation.

The much anticipated return of Wonderboom

This group inspired me so much as an indie filmmaker so much that I made a short documentary about them. Sadly the new generation for some obscure reason, possibly inadequate marketing, doesn’t seem to know who Wonderboom is…

Yet they had 2 hit songs in 2008 “It’s great to be alive” which is being revisited in the current Pajero ad and “Best Side”. Both these songs where no 1 on the high5@5 5FM playlist, and yet people didn’t know who sang it!

They are of course only the most talented and creative South African bands to come out of the nineties! Joining the likes of Springbok Nude Girls, Lithium, Just Jinger and Sugardrive, who can ever forget hits like “Charlie”, “Africa”, “Green Fever”, “Smile Pantsula”, “Johnny” and “Japhta Rebel”!

All of the guys in the band are talented musicians with their own side music projects on the side. Cito, lead vocalist of Wonderboom, performs with Sugardrive’s Paul E Flynn in ‘Absinthe’ and also in solo project ‘Cito and the Mistakes’. The stunning vocals of Cito have only improved with leading roles in musicals “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Chess” by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. While Martin Schofield, guitarist in Wonderboom, is vocalist of popular psycho Billy band ‘Martin Rocka’ and guitarist for the electric ‘Flash Republic’.

Wonderboom was nominated for 5 SAMA awards and in 2004 they won “Best South African Rock Band” for a Global Battle of the Bands and subsequently came second in the international competition in London. Now that’s talent!

The group has had a loyal fan base for years following them around on their gigs and having regular discussions on their web page. I just love how they able to tell me about all their fans individually, who have followed them around South Africa over the last 15 years.

Unfortunately for us in Cape Town, we have not been so lucky to see that much of the band. In Johannesburg however they still make the most of an active performance schedule. Cape Townians must be very curious to see if it is still the bare chested, tattooed guys oozing sex appeal that entices any crowd into a frenzy, as was seen the last time in 2008 at “Up the Creek” music festival!

Hopefully then with the release of the new album with the funky name of “The Automatic Shuffle” we will see Wonderboom in Cape Town again!

Here is what front man Cito had to say:

“The Automatic Shuffle’s recording process has been one of the most enjoyable and creative experiences of my music career. Because we had the luxury of spending time creating, arranging and experimenting through pre-production, I feel that we’ve come up with our greatest album yet. It’s colorful, it’s 3D, it’s dancey, rocky and fun.”

Suffice to say I want to be the first to promote their brilliant new album! It rocks Wonderboom style! The tattooed musicians at their best!

Martin enthusiastically tells me this album is ‘Vintage Wonderboom’ – “the best they have done so far.!”

We now wait in anticipation for “The Automatic shuffle”!

Back in the land of Milk and Honies

The most successful rock band ever in South Africa, having sold more that a quarter of a million albums, Just Jinjer is back in SA. Their new 8-track EP Milk and Honies has recently been released through Sony Music.

Over the last decade, the band has performed and toured with U2, Counting Crows, Stevie Wonder, Maroon 5 and Def Leppard among many others, in venues all around the world from the UK to Dubai. After their experience of living in the US and in London for the past ten years, Just Jinjer is now signed to Curb Records in US and global distribution for the album “Just Jinjer “is now in place for March 2010.

The lyrics of the title track of “Milk and Honies” were inspired by Ard’s deep-rooted love for South Africa, truly the land of “Milk and Honies”. See full press release for “Milk and Honies” attached.
