Review | aKing, Ashtray Electric & New Holland

August 1, 2008 – 17:11 by John

Bands never start on time. Everybody knows that. Well apparently, in Stellenbosch they stick to the clock. After missing New Holland and Ashtray Electric, we waltz into the massive hall to witness aKing getting ready to rock. Oops.

If one thing?s for sure, people are different on the other side of the boerewors curtain. The Stellies crowd simply make Capetonians look plain boring. It was an experience to watch a 500+ group of aKing diehards go wild whenever front man, Laudo Liebenberg moved. The roar that exploded through the massive space after each song would have put any night at Mercury to shame.

Whether it was the crowd?s energy or simply a good night for the band, aKing were definitely on form. I think even they were in shock at the audiences? wholehearted receptiveness. As Laudo sang their latest single, Safe As Houses, the crowd sang along so loudly that you almost couldn?t hear the band at all. It was all just eyes closed tightly, heads lolled back and a beer clasped firmly in each and every audience member?s hand; belting out the lyrics as loud as they thought was humanely possible.

When guitarist Hunter Kennedy threw some comp t-shirts to the masses, one would have thought we were all at a Led Zeppelin reunion tour considering the crowd?s reaction. Picture pushing and shoving and people using their neighbours as elevators; all to get their hands on an aKing t-shirt. Just imagine the response when drummer Snakehead Venter threw his drumsticks into the abyss.

In the end, this was without a doubt a party to remember, even if there was only an hour left of it to enjoy. It?s official: aKing in Stellenbosch is a must-see event. If you don?t venture out to see them anywhere else, make the effort to see them in this town and I assure you, you won?t be disappointed.
